Description
Autophagy is a degradation system of cytoplasmic proteins and organelles via formation of double-membrane vesicles called autophagosomes (1). Defects in autophagy are associated with various human diseases including cancer and neurodegeneration (2). ATG9 functions in autophagy as the only integral membrane protein that is essential for double-membrane vesicle formation (2). It is probably transported to the site of autophagosome formation, the pre-autophagosomal structure (PAS) (2). One member of the ATG9 family, ATG9A (Autophagy-related gene 9A), is an autophagy-related membrane protein that is required for autophagosome formation (3, 4). Although ATG9A is ubiquitously detected, it is highly expressed in neurons of the central nervous system (4).
