L-Lysine is an essential α-amino acid, which is encoded by the codons AAA and AAG. Studies suggest that L-Lysine is a key building block in protein synthesis in which it acts as a base. The poly L-Lysine form can be used to suppress prion propagation in mouse models. This amino acid is often post-translationally modified producing analogues that serve different functions. These modifications include acetylation, methylation, ubiquitination, sumoylation, neddylation, biotinylation, pupylation and carboxylation. Furthermore, L-Lysine is a moderate serotonin antagonist, which suppresses its release from SR-4 (5-HT4) receptors. |
