This document establishes the content for commercial specifications for paver-finishers used in road construction and maintenance processes for the placement and pre-compaction of paving materials. It covers the machine and its components and establishes parameters for technical characteristics for both. This document does not cover commercial specifications for road wideners which can perform similarly to a paver-finisher under certain conditions.

1.1 This terminology covers definitions for approved standards under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee E17 on Vehicle-Pavement Systems. Definitions of terms specific to an individual standard are listed in the appendix. For additional information, see Terminology D8, Terminology F538, Special Report 113, and SAE J 2047, or contact ISO, PIARC, or CEN. 1.2 Other publications may reference this terminology for terms used therein. 1.3 The standard containing the term and the responsible subcommittee of Committee E17 is listed at the end of each definition. Revision of the listed standard by that subcommittee will include review of the definition and approved changes or additions will be incorporated herein. 1.4 The terms in this terminology standard are listed in categories of the five groups of Committee E17. These are definitions that are in multiple standards in various subcommittees in Groups II to V. The structure of E17 is as follows: Group II on Skid Resistance, E17.21, E17.22, E17.23, E17.24, Group III Roughness E17.31, E17.32, Group IV Pavement Management E17.41, and Group V Intelligent Transportation Systems E17.51, E17.52, E17.54. 1.5 This terminology lists the definition as presented in the approved standards. Variation of any term is also listed and referenced to the defined term (for example the term hydroplaning, viscous is also listed and referenced to the defined viscous hydroplaning). 1.6 The term and its elements should appear in the following order; term; abbreviation; symbol; dimensions of quantities, measurement units; part of a speech; delimiting phrase; statement of meaning, including specifications limits where applicable; cross references to synonyms or related terms; attribution. 1.7 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

1.1 This terminology is a compilation of definitions of technical terms used in the underground infrastructure and plastic piping industry. Terms that are generally understood or adequately defined in other readily available sources are not included. 1.2 When a term is used in an ASTM document for which Committee F36 is responsible, it is included only when judged, after review, by Subcommittee F36.91 to be a generally usable term. 1.3 Definitions that are identical to those published by other ASTM committees or other standards organizations are identified with the committee number (for example, F17) or with the abbreviation of the name of the organization (for example, IUPAC, International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry). 1.4 A definition is a single sentence with additional information included in discussions. 1.5 Definitions are followed by the committee responsible for the standard(s) (for example, [F36.10]) and standard numbers(s) in which they are used (for example, F2233). 1.6 Abbreviated Terminology: 1.6.1 Abbreviated terminology is intended to provide uniform contractions of terms relating to infrastructure that have evolved through widespread common usage. The compilation in this standard has been prepared to avoid the occurrence of more than one abbreviated term for a given term and to avoid multiple meanings for abbreviated terms. 1.6.2 The abbreviated terminology and descriptions in this standard are intended to be consistent with usage in the infrastructure industry and the standards under F36 jurisdiction. Other ASTM committees may assign a different wordphrase description to the same abbreviated terminology. In such cases, the abbreviated terms in this standard shall apply to usage in F36 standards, or if widespread misunderstanding could result from conflicting abbreviated terminology descriptions, the abbreviated terminology for the word-phrase shall not be used in F36 standards. 1.6.3 Acronyms and Initialisms—A word formed from the letters or parts of words of a longer word-phrase, usually from the initial letters or parts of the words. An acronym is pronounced as a word, for example, radar for radio detection and ranging. An initialism is pronounced as a series of letters, for example, DOT for Department of Transportation. 1.6.4 The acronym or initialism description is the origin word-phrase for the acronym or initialism, not a definition. 1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.8 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

1.1 This terminology provides definitions for pavement distress for airfields, highways, roads, streets, and parking lots of all functional classifications. 1.2 This terminology covers surfaces paved with either bituminous or portland cement concrete. It does not include other paved or unpaved surfaces. 1.3 This terminology includes most of the significant types of pavement surface distresses, but it is not all inclusive. 1.4 Not all distresses noted are applicable to all pavement categories listed in 1.1. 1.5 Severity levels are not addressed in this terminology but are addressed in other ASTM test methods and practices (for example, Test Method D5340). However, a knowledge of severity levels is required for evaluating many of the distresses defined in this terminology. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
