This part of ISO 3166 provides principles and maintenance arrangements of a code for the representation of country names removed from editions 1 to 4 of ISO 3166 and the consecutive edition of ISO 3166-1. Clauses 8 and 9 contain lists of all formerly used country names removed from ISO 3166 (now ISO 3166-1) since 1974, together with the code element for each one of them.

ISO 3166 Codes for the representation of names of countries (now ISO 3166-1:1997) was firstpublished in 1974. In that context the additional information interchange requirement for auniversally applicable code for the representation of the names of principal administrative divisions, orsimilar areas, of the countries etc. included in what is now ISO 3166-1 was first recognized. It shouldalso be noted that ISO 3166-1 already includes certain country names that in fact are names of such divisions.

By following these procedures, a forensic document examiner can reliably reach an opinion concerning the source of the item(s) examined. The examinations described in this guide pertain to those documents prepared on typewriters and can consist of a wide range of forensic examinations. Some or all of these procedures can also be applicable to examinations of documents prepared on other impact and nonimpact printing devices. Examinations can be conducted to classify a typestyle and to determine the possible make and model of typewriter(s) by comparison with a typestyle library. Examinations and comparisons of typewritten documents can be conducted for the purpose of determining whether or not they are from a common source. Examinations and comparisons of typewritten documents can be conducted for the purpose of determining whether or not they were produced using a particular typewriter or type element.
