This section of the NF X 70-100 standard describes the physico-chemical analysis of the gases likely to be produced dudng the thermal degradation of substances, materials or combinations thereof. This thermal degradation can be achieved either as stipulated in part 2 of this document or following other thermal degradation methods. The analysis steps cover the gases most commonly found in fire contexts. These gases are listed below: -- carbon monoxide, CO; -- carbon dioxide, C02; -- halogen acids (hydrochloric acid, HCI; hydrobromic acid, HBr; hydrofluoric acid, HF); -- hydrocyanic acid, HCN; -- sulphur dioxide, S02; -- nitrogen monoxide, NO; nitrogen dioxide, NO2, and NO2 nitric oxides; -- aldehydes (acrolein, CH2CHCHO; formaldehyde, HCHO). The use of the results is under the responsibility of the sponsor of the tests. NOTE Since certain analytical methods carry health and safety risks, it is extremely important to take all necessary precautions to eliminate any dangers faced by operators during handling.

1.1 This test method is used to measure the arc rating of materials intended for use as flame resistant clothing for workers exposed to electric arcs that would generate heat flux rates from 84 to 25120 kW/m 2 [2 to 600 cal/cm2].1.2 This test method will measure the arc rating of materials which meet the following requirements: less than 150 mm [6 in.] char length and less than 2 s afterflame when tested in accordance with Test Method D 6413.1.2.1 It is not the intent of this test method to evaluate non flame-resistant materials except where used as under layers in multiple-layer specimens.1.3 The materials used in this test method are in the form of flat specimens.1.4 This test method shall be used to measure and describe the properties of materials, products, or assemblies in response to convective and radiant energy generated by an electric arc under controlled laboratory conditions.1.5 The values stated in SI units shall be regarded as standard except as noted. Within the text, alternate units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents therefore alternate systems must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the systems described in the text may result in nonconformance with the method.1.6 This test method does not apply to electrical contact or electrical shock hazards.1.7 This standard shall not be used to describe or appraise the fire hazard or fire risk of materials, products, or assemblies under actual fire conditions. This test method is used primarily to determine time-to-ignition, vertical flame spread rate, and lateral flame spread rate of materials, products and assemblies in a vertical orientation when exposed to a graduated radiant heat flux. Optionally, this test method is suitable to measure the heat release rate and smoke development rate of materials, products and assemblies in a vertical orientation when exposed to a graduated radiant heat flux. This test method is suitable to test materials that have a planar or nearly planar exposed surface. This test method is not intended to test materials with surface cracks, fissures or holes exceeding 8 mm in width or 10 mm in depth. Also, the total area of such cracks, fissures or holes at the surface shall not exceed 30 % of the exposed surface area of the specimen.1.1 This fire-test-response standard determines fire properties related to piloted ignition of a vertically oriented specimen exposed to an external graduated radiant heat flux as shown in . This test method provides data suitable for comparing the performance of materials, which are used as the exposed surfaces of walls or other vertically orientated products in construction applications.Note 1This test method has been prepared to closely follow the test procedure of ISO 5658-4, however with additional provisions for heat release and smoke development measurements that are optional.1.2 The fire characteristics determined by this test method include time-to-ignition, vertical flame spread rate and lateral flame spread rate. Optional measurements include heat release rates and visible smoke development rates.1.3 The optional heat release rate is determined by the principle of oxygen consumption calorimetry, via measurement of the oxygen consumption as determined by the oxygen concentration and flow rate in the exhaust product stream (exhaust duct).1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard.1.5 This standard is used to measure and describe the response of materials, products, or assemblies to heat and flame under controlled conditions, but does not by itself incorporate all factors required for fire hazard or fire risk assessment of the materials, products, or assemblies under actual fire conditions.1.6 Fire testing of products and materials is inherently hazardous, and adequate safeguards for personnel and property shall be employed in conducting these tests. This test method may involve hazardous materials, operations, and equipment. 1.1 This fire-test-response standard determines and quantifies synthetic polymer material flammability characteristics, related to the propensity of materials to support fire propagation, by means of a fire propagation apparatus (FPA). Material flammability characteristics that are quantified include time to ignition (tign), chemical ( Qchem), and convective ( Qc) heat release rates, mass loss rate ( m) and effective heat of combustion (EHC).1.2 The following test methods, capable of being performed separately and independently, are included herein:1.2.1 Ignition Test, to determine tign for a horizontal specimen;1.2.2 Combustion Test, to determine Qchem, Qc'm, and EHC from burning of a horizontal specimen; and,1.2.3 Fire Propagation Test to determine Qchem from burning of a vertical specimen.1.3 Distinguishing features of the FPA include tungsten-quartz external, isolated heaters to provide a radiant flux of up to 65 kW/m 2 to the test specimen, which remains constant whether the surface regresses or expands; provision for combustion or upward fire propagation in prescribed flows of normal air, air enriched with up to 40 % oxygen, air oxygen vitiated, pure nitrogen or mixtures of gaseous suppression agents with the preceding air mixtures; and, the capability of measuring heat release rates and exhaust product flows generated during upward fire propagation on a vertical test specimen 0.305 m high.1.4 The FPA is used to evaluate the flammability of synthetic polymer materials and products. It is also designed to obtain the transient response of such materials and products to prescribed heat fluxes in specified inert or oxidizing environments and to obtain laboratory measurements of generation rates of fire products (CO2, CO, and, if desired, gaseous hydrocarbons) for use in fire safety engineering.1.5 Ignition of the specimen is by means of a pilot flame at a prescribed location with respect to the specimen surface.1.6 The Fire Propagation test of vertical specimens is not suitable for materials that, on heating, melt sufficiently to form a liquid pool.1.7 Values stated are in SI units.
