This part of ISO 10295 specifies the heating condition, method of test and criteria for the evaluation of the ability of a penetration sealing system to maintain the integrity and insulation of a fire separating element at the position at which it has been penetrated, for example by a service. This part of ISO 10295 assesses a) the effect of such penetrations on the integrity and insulation performance of the element concerned, b) the integrity and insulation performance of the penetration sealing system, c) the insulation performance of the penetrating service or services, and where appropriate, the integrity failure of a service. This part of ISO 10295 does not provide information concerning the influence of the inclusion of such penetrations and sealing systems on the load-bearing capacity of the element. It is possible that a penetration seal is a component of, or contributes to the performance of, a system to which special requirements apply. In such cases additional tests, relevant to the system and its function, can be necessary. Examples are chimneys and fire-rated ducts in air distribution systems. This part of ISO 10295 is not intended to provide quantitative information on the rate of leakage of smoke and/or hot gases or on the transmission or generation of fumes. Such phenomena are to be noted in describing the general behaviour of specimens during test. This part of ISO 10295 does not provide information on the ability of the seal to withstand stresses that can be caused by the movement or displacement of the penetration services in practice. CAUTION The attention of all persons concerned with managing and carrying out this fire test is drawn to the fact that fire testing may be hazardous and that there is a possibility that toxic and/or harmful smoke and gases may be evolved during the test. Mechanical and operational hazards may also arise during the construction of the test elements or structures, their testing, and disposal of test residues. An assessment of all potential hazards and risks to health shall be made and safety precautions shall be identified and provided. Written safety instructions shall be issued. Appropriate training shall be given to relevant personnel. Laboratory personnel shall ensure that they follow written safety instructions at all times. This part of ISO 12468 specifies a test method to determine the resistance of roofs to external exposure to fire. This method evaluates the behaviour of the roof when exposed to three types of burning brands combined with wind and with or without heat radiation, concerning a) the fire spread across the external surface of the roof, b) the fire spread within the roof, c) the fire penetration, and d) the production of flaming droplets or debris falling through the roof, from the underside of the roof, or from the exposed surface.

This International Standard provides a method for measuring the response of materials, products and assemblies exposed in vertical orientation to controlled levels of radiant heating with a piloted ignition source. This test method is used to determine the ignitability, heat release rates, mass loss rates and visible smoke development of materials, products and assemblies under well-ventilated conditions. The heat release rate is ascertained by measurement of the oxygen consumption as determined by the oxygen concentration and flow in the exhaust product stream as specified in 5.5.8. Smoke development is quantified by measuring the obscuration of light by the combustion product stream. Specimens are exposed to heating fluxes ranging from 0 kW/m2 to 50 kW/m2. Hot wires are used as the ignition source. This test method has been developed for material, product or assembly evaluations, mathematical modelling and design purposes. The specimen shall be tested in thicknesses and configurations representative of actual end product or system uses. The test method in this International Standard is based on the apparatus described in ASTM E1623 [13].

This Technical Report gives a review of the advances that have been made in measuring and understanding how structural materials respond to fire in terms of changes in their elevated temperature, and physical and mechanical characteristics, and to identify areas where further work is necessary to generate the data required. Analytical methods for heat transfer are combined with mechanical models to calculate structural behaviour from single elements up to complete frames under real fire and ISO Standard furnace heating conditions. This Technical Report reviews advances in computational analysis and indicates how these can be used with probabilistic analysis to provide a risk-based approach to structural fire engineering design.

This part of EN 1366 specifies a method for determining the fire resistance of non-mechanical fire barriers installed in fire separating elements designed to withstand heat and the passage of smoke and gases at high temperature. This European Standard is used in conjunction with EN 1363-1 and EN 1366-2. This European Standard is not suitable for testing non-mechanical fire barriers in suspended ceilings without modification. This European Standard specifies a method for determining the fire resistance of vertical and horizontal ventilation ducts including those access panels, which are integral part of the tested ducts. The test examines the behaviour of ducts exposed to fire from the outside (duct A) and fire inside the duct (duct B). This European Standard is used in conjunction with EN 1363-1. Annex A provides general guidance and gives background information. This European Standard is not applicable to: a) ducts whose fire resistance depends on the fire resistance performance of a ceiling or wall (where ducts are located in cavities enclosed by fire-resistant shafts or ceilings); b) ducts containing fire dampers at points where they pass through fire separations; c) one, two or three sided ducts; d) fixing of suspension devices (e. g. anchors) to floors or walls.

This European Standard specifies a test method for determining the ability of a horizontal protective membrane, when used as a fire resistant barrier, to contribute to the fire resistance of standard horizontal structural building members as defined in 6.4.2. Test of horizontal protective membrane installed under a specific non-standard floor should be tested according to EN 1365-2. This European Standard contains the fire test which specifies the tests which are carried out whereby the horizontal protective membrane, together with the structural member to be protected, is exposed to a fire test according to the procedures defined herein. The fire exposure, to the temperature/time curve given in EN 1363-1, is applied from below the membrane itself. The test method makes provision, through specified optional additional procedures, for the collection of data which can be used as direct input to the calculation of fire resistance according to the processes given within EN 1992-1-2, EN 1993-1-2, EN 1994-1-2 and EN 1995-1-2. This European Standard also contains the assessment which provides information relative to the analysis of the test data and gives guidance for the interpretation of the results of the fire test, in terms of loadbearing capacity criteria of the protected horizontal structural member. In special circumstances, where specified in national building regulations, there can be a need to subject the protection material to a smouldering curve. The test for this and the special circumstances for its use are detailed in Annex C. The limits of applicability of the results of the assessment arising from the fire test are defined, together with permitted direct application of the results to different structures, membranes and fittings.
