5.1 The purpose of these test methods is to provide reliable and repeatable tests for the evaluation of various types of protective headgear. Use of these test methods in conjunction with the specific individual performance standards is intended to reduce the likelihood of serious injury and death resulting from impacts to the head sustained by individuals participating in sports, recreation, and other leisure activities in which protective headgear is worn. 1.1 These test methods cover laboratory equipment, procedures, and basic requirements pertinent to testing protective headgear. Deviations or additions, or both, to these test methods will be specified, as required, in individual ASTM performance standards. 1.2 Requirements—The protective headgear is to be tested under specified environmental conditions for the following: 1.2.1 Impact attenuation (the limiting of head acceleration) of the protective headgear, and 1.2.2 Strength and stability of the retention system and its attachment to the protective headgear. 1.2.3 Special tests for particular protective headgear uses will be specified in the individual performance standards to be used in conjunction with these test methods. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This Technical Specification specifies a method for measuring noise reduction of passive hearing protectors at the threshold of hearing. The method is designed to provide estimates of the noise reduction obtained by typical groups of users in real-world occupational settings, who may lack the training and motivation to wear hearing protectors in an optimum manner. The principle of the test method is to measure the difference in hearing threshold with and without wearing a hearing protector. This difference between the thresholds constitutes the noise reduction. The measurement is done twice on a given number of test subjects. NOTE 1 The principle of measuring the influence of a hearing protector on the hearing threshold is used in ISO 4869-1 and in this Technical Specification. The method described in ISO 4869-1 yields the sound attenuation of the hearing protector under test. The result of the measurement is a pure physical characteristic of the hearing protector. The method described in this Technical Specification yields the performance of the system as a whole, i.e. the influence of hearing protector, test subjects, fitting and instruction. This test method yields data that are collected at low sound pressure levels (close to the threshold of hearing), but which are also representative of the noise reduction values of hearing protectors at higher sound pressure levels. This Technical Specification is inapplicable for level-dependent hearing protectors for sound pressure levels above the point at which their level-dependent characteristics become effective. NOTE 2 At frequencies below 500 Hz, real-ear noise reduction data measured according to this Technical Specification may be spuriously high by a few decibels, with the error increasing as the frequency decreases. The error results from masking of the occluded-ear threshold by physiological noise during testing.

This part of ISO 4869 specifies a method for measuring the insertion loss of ear-muff type hearing protectors using an acoustic test fixture. The method is applicable to the investigation of production spreads of performance as part of type approval or certification procedures, and to the investigation of the change of performance with age. It is intended to ensure that ear-muff hearing protector samples submitted for subjective testing of attenuation according to ISO 4869-1 have performances typical of the type. The method specified in this part of ISO 4869 is not applicable as the basic test for type approval. Performance data obtained by this method are not intended to be quoted as representing the real-ear sound attenuation of an ear-muff, nor the protection provided by the ear-muff. For the testing of certain ear-muffs (such as those attached to safety helmets, or those with contoured ear-cups or ear-cushions, or supra-aural ear-muffs), the procedure described in this part of ISO 4869 might need to be modified.

This part of ISO 4869 describes three methods (the octave-band, HML and SNR methods) of estimating the A-weighted sound pressure levels effective when hearing protectors are worn. The methods are applicable to either the sound pressure level or the equivalent continuous sound pressure level of the noise. Although primarily intended for steady noise exposures, the methods are also applicable to noises containing impulsive components. These methods are not suitable for use with peak sound pressure level measurements. The octave-band, H, M, L or SNR values are suitable for establishing sound attenuation criteria for selecting or comparing hearing protectors, and/or setting minimum acceptable sound attenuation requirements.
