Riguarda la selezione di zone di tolleranza per accoppiamenti raccomandati ed ha lo scopo di limitare il numero di utensili, calibrati di verifica e strumenti di misura. Nel sistema ISO di tolleranze ed accoppiamenti è contenuto un gran numero di zone di tolleranza di comune impiego. Queste zone di tolleranza sono state considerate con alcuni ampliamenti nelle norme nazionali degli scostamenti per zone di tolleranza. Dalla connessione di due pezzi, uno interno e l' altro esterno, con una qualsiasi di queste zone di tolleranza ne deriverebbe un gran numero di accoppiamenti. Una fabbricazione economica richiede invece una notevole limitazione del numero delle zone di tolleranza, il cui abbinamento porta agli accoppiamenti raccomandati. Nei prospetti 1 e 2 sono dati due quadri sinottici delle zone di tolleranza per alberi e fori, per accoppiamenti raccomandati, previste nella norma. Nel prospetto 3 sono dati gli scostamenti per alberi. Nel prospetto 4 sono dati gli scostamenti per fori.
