This International Standard provides a summary of a selection of recommended methods available for the measurement of liquid flow in tidal channels, special consideration being given to those techniques that are either unique to or particularly appropriate for measurement under tidal conditions, including treatment of errors. Reference is also made, where appropriate, to methods developed for measurement in non-tidal channels, but in such cases attention is drawn to their limitations with respect to practicality and/or accuracy. This International Standard does not describe alternative methods, such as weirs, flumes, dilution gauging, salt velocity and floats, although they may be suitable under certain conditions, especially where the effect of tides only impedes and does not stop or reverse the passage of stream flow. These methods are described in detail in other International Standards. The standard comprises two parts: a) techniques for single measurements of tidal flow; b) techniques appropriate for continuous measurement of tidal flow. The cubature method of measurement, although currently not used, is included in annex A. Annex B presents methods suitable for measurement for tidal conditions, and annex C gives an example of the computation for a single vertical. Similar computations may be made for other verticals.

This part of ISO 1100 specifies methods of determining the stage-discharge relation for a gauging station. A sufficient number of discharge measurements, complete with corresponding stage measurements, is required to define a stage-discharge relation to the accuracy required by this part of ISO 1100. Stable and unstable channels are considered, including brief descriptions of the effects on the stage-discharge relation of ice and hysteresis. Methods for determining discharge for twin-gauge stations, ultrasonic velocity stations, electromagnetic velocity stations, and other complex ratings are not described in detail. These types of rating are described in other International Standards and Technical Reports, namely ISO/TR 9123, ISO 6416 and ISO 9213, as shown in clause 2.

This Technical Report describes a method for computing continuous records of stream flow in an open channel through the numerical solution of the one-dimensional unsteady flow equations. Such an approach is typically identified as an unsteady flow model and generally involves the use of computers for solution of the flow equations. Unsteady flow models are appropriate for computing stream flow records at locations where (1) a single-valued stage-discharge relation does not exist, (2) backwater affects the discharge under selected or all conditions, (3) flows are affected by tides, or (4) it is not possible to gage the flow using velocity-area methods. Unsteady flow models also are appropriate for evaluating the effects of changes in a managed flow regime on downstream conditions prior to the implementation of any changes. This Technical Report is applicable to steady and unsteady flows, to nominee flows, and to tidal flows in which there are no significant longitudinal and vertical density gradients. The method is considered equivalent to, or better than, the commonly used stage-fall-discharge technique (ISO 1100-1:1996, 7.2 and Annex C) because the method uses information on the physical characteristics of the channel, including the cross-sectional geometry, channel rugosity and channel slope, and the method is based on a mathematical description of the physics of fluid flow. This Technical Report describes the theoretical basis and fundamental assumptions of the technique, and provides a summary of selected numerical methods used to solve the unsteady flow equations. Also provided are details on the application of an unsteady flow model, including data requirements, procedures for model calibration, testing, and applications, and identification of uncertainties associated with the method. This Technical Report does not provide sufficient information for the development of a computer program for solving the unsteady flow equations, but rather is based on the assumption that an adequately documented computer program is available
