The method is suitable for use under somewhat special conditions when direct measurement of discharge by more accurate methods is not possible. It can be used with reasonable accuracy in open channels having stable boundaries, bed and sides (e.g. rock), in lined channels and in channels with relatively coarse material. In other cases it is subject to large uncertainties, and it is not suitable for use in very large channels, channels with very flat surface slopes and high sediment load or channnels having significant curvature.

This National Standard of Canada is equivalent to International Standard ISO 748:1979. This International Standard specifies methods for determining the velocity and cross-sectional area of water flowing in open channels (with or without ice cover), and or computing the discharge therefrom. It covers methods of employing current-meters and floats to measure the velocities. Although, in most cases, these measurements are intended to determine the stage-discharge relation by means of readings at several stages, this International Standard deals only with single measurements of the discharge; the continuous recording of discharges over a period of time is covered in ISO 1100. NOTE - Measurements for the purpose of determining the discharge in efficiency tests of hydraulic turbines are specified in IEC Publication 41, International code for the field acceptance tests of hydraulic turbines.

This Technical Report describes a velocity-area method which can be carried out using three verti-cals only, without significant loss of accuracy, and gives advice on when such a "short-cut" method should be used. The method specified in this Technical Report is not an alternative to the velocity-area method specified in ISO 748, which gives accurate results and should be used under normal conditions. This short-cut method has a limited field of application and is in-tended for use only in special circumstances, ex-amples of which are given in clause 7.
