This part of IEC 60118 specifies the electrical and mechanical requirements for an interface device to allow a general-purpose control device such as a desktop computer to be connected to hearing aids, for the purpose of electrical setting of their operating parameters. There is no specification of anything within the hearing aid, such as types of parameters and their signal processing characteristics, nor is there any specification of the parameter setting procedure – the method used to determine which settings are most appropriate to the person wearing the hearing aid. This standard is restricted to the digital interface between the control device and the hearing aid. This standard provides a specification such that all hearing aids which can be programmed by the specified digital interface may have their parameters set by a single control device and interface device. The specifications of this standard are for use in connection with hearing aids with parameters set by a direct electrical connection using a cable. They do not cover hearing aids with parameters controlled by radio frequency or infrared transmission, or any other "wireless" method of control.

This part of IEC 60318 describes an acoustic coupler for loading an earphone or hearing aid with a specified acoustic impedance when determining its physical performance characteristics, in the frequency range 125 Hz to 8 kHz. It is suitable for air conduction hearing aids and earphones, coupled to the ear by means of ear inserts e.g. ear moulds or similar devices. The sound pressure developed by an earphone is not, in general, the same in the coupler as in a person’s ear. However, it can be used as a simple and ready means for the exchange of specifications and of physical data on hearing aids and for the calibration of specified insert earphones used in audiometry.

The purpose of this part of IEC 60118 is to describe methods for a test which simulates the acoustical effects of a median adult wearer on the performance of a hearing aid. It establishes certain guidelines for simulated in situ measurements of hearing aids; it describes a simplified method for simulated in situ measurements of hearing aids and a description for determination of the directivity index (DI) of directional microphones in hearing aids in the horizontal plane. In addition this second edition now specifies tolerances. Conformance to the specifications in this International Standard is demonstrated only when the result of a measurement, extended by the actual expanded uncertainty of measurement of the testing laboratory, lies fully within the tolerances specified in this International Standard extended by the values for Umax

1.1 This standard applies to the hearing aids of any type with automatic gain control (AGC) circuits. This standard gives uniform, methods for specifying dynamic and static performance characteristics of hearing aids with AGC circuits together with the relevant methods of measurement for these characteristics. This standard is confined to a description of the different characteristics and the relevant methods of measurement. It does not attempt to specify performance requirements. 1.2 This standard includes devices which have compression and/or limiting properties with respect to the envelope of the input signal. Devices which control the long-term average output level are also included. a) AGC is employed to obtain compression, or the reduction of the dynamic range of the sound at the output, with the object of preserving the integrity of the input waveform. b) AGC circuits instead of clipping devices are often used for limiting purposes. A limiting effect occurs when the input/output characteristic flattens out at higher input levels. Limiting action is mainly used as a means of preventing excessive output sound from the hearing aid from reaching the listener's ear. 1.3 This standard does not include: a) Expanders. b) Clipping devices, which cut off the signal peaks above a certain level; such devices differ basically from AGC circuits, which, in a steady state, tend to preserve the waveform of the input signal. Note. – An AGC circuit with very short recovery time may cause considerable distortion, especially in the low-frequency range. This should be given special attention.

This part of IEC 60645 applies to instruments designed primarily for the measurement of acoustic impedance/admittance in the human external acoustic meatus using a stated probe tone. It is recognized that other probe signals may also be used. The standard defines the characteristics to be specified by the manufacturer, lays down performance specifications for three types of instruments and specifies the facilities to be provided on these types. This standard describes methods of test to be used for approval testing and guidance on methods for undertaking routine calibration. The purpose of this standard is to ensure that measurements made under comparable test conditions with different instruments complying with the standard will be consistent. The standard is not intended to restrict development or incorporation of new features, nor to discourage innovative approaches.

This part of IEC 60118 is applicable to audio-frequency induction-loop systems producing an alternating magnetic field at audio frequencies and intended to provide an input signal for hearing aids operating with an induction pick-up coil (telecoil). Throughout this standard, it is assumed that the hearing aids used with it conform to all relevant parts of IEC 60118. This standard specifies requirements for the field strength in audio-frequency induction loops for hearing aid purposes, which will give adequate signal-to-noise ratio without overloading the hearing aid. The standard also specifies the minimum frequency response requirements for acceptable intelligibility. Methods for measuring the magnetic field strength are specified, and information is given on appropriate measuring equipment (see Annex B), information that should be provided to the operator and users of the system (see Annex C), and other important considerations. This standard does not specif y requirements for loop driver amplifiers or associated microphone or audio signal sources, which are dealt with in IEC 62489-1, or for the field strength produced by equipment, such as telephone handsets, within the scope of ITU-T P.370.

This part of IEC 645 specifies requirements for audiometers or parts thereof designed to provide a means of presenting speech sounds to a subject in a standardized manner, for example for the measurement of speech recognition. Audiometers are classified into four types: type A instruments provide a wide range of facilities, while type B provides only basic facilities. For both types, the audiometer may be calibrated in terms of a free-field equivalent output level of the earphones and then be des ignated as type A-E or B-E. This standard excludes the requirements for speech audiometers provided with frequency response adjustments intended to determine an optimal intelligibility frequency response curve for each subject. The purpose of this standard is to ensure that tests of hearing using speech as the test stimulus, on a given human ear performed with different audiometers which comply with this standard, shall give substantially the same results for a given calibration method. Two methods of specification, calibration and testing are given for the output levels generated by the earphones and the bone vibrator: a) a free-field equivalent output level method with audiometers of types A-E and B-E; b) an uncorrected coupler output level method with audiometers of types A and B. NOTE - The results will also depend on factors other than the audiometer for example test material, test room, speakers, etc.

This part of IEC 60118 in principle covers all relevant EMC phenomena for hearing aids. EMC phenomena, such as RF emission and electrostatic discharge, are not currently known to be a significant problem in connection with hearing aids and are therefore not dealt with. Based on new knowledge, they could be considered in connection with future revisions or extensions of this standard. Hearing aid immunity to high frequency electromagnetic fields originating from digital wireless devices operating in the frequency ranges 0,8 GHz to 0,96 GHz and 1,4 GHz to 2,48 GHz is currently identified as the only relevant EMC phenomenon regarding hearing aids. Future editions of this part of IEC 60118 may add tests for other frequency bands, as they come into more common use. IEC 61000-4-3 is the basis for relevant EMC tests to be conducted on hearing aids. Measurement methods and acceptance levels are described in this part of IEC 60118. For the purpose of this part of IEC 60118, two immunity classes of hearing aids are defined (see 3.1) related to their use. "Bystander compatible" ensures that a hearing aid is usable in environments where digital wireless devices are in operation in the proximity of the hearing aid wearer. "User compatible" hearing aids ensures that a hearing aid is usable when the wearer is using a digital wireless device at the wearer’s own aided ear. Measurement methods for hearing aids with non-acoustic outputs and for hearing aids connected to other equipment by cables are not given in this standard.

This part of IEC 61094 specifies mechanical dimensions and certain electroacoustic characteristics for condenser microphones used as laboratory standards for the realization of the unit of sound pressure and for sound pressure measurements of the highest attainable accuracy. The specifications are intended to ensure that primary calibration by the reciprocity method can be readily carried out. This part also establishes a system for classifying laboratory standard condenser microphones into a number of types according to their dimensions and properties in order to facilitate the specification of calibration methods, the conducting of inter-laboratory comparisons involving the calibration of the same microphones in different laboratories, and the interchangeability of microphones in a given calibration system.

1.1 This part of the IEC 61260 series specifies performance requirements for analogue, sampled-data, and digital implementations of band-pass filters. The extent of the pass-band region of a filter's relative attenuation characteristic is a constant percentage of the exact midband frequency for all filters of a given bandwidth. An instrument conforming to the requirements of this standard may contain any number of contiguous band-pass filters covering any desired frequency range. 1.2 Performance requirements are provided for two filter classes: class 1 and class 2. In general, specifications for class 1 and class 2 filters have the same design goals and differ mainly in the acceptance limits and the range of operational temperature. Acceptance limits for class 2 are greater than, or equal to, those for class 1. Maximum-permitted expanded uncertainties of measurement are also specified. 1.3 Performance requirements are given for designs where the octave frequency ratio and the mid-band frequencies are powers of ten. 1.4 Band-pass filters conforming to the performance requirements of this standard may be part of various measurement systems or may be an integral component of a specific instrument such as a spectrum analyser. 1.5 This standard specifies the ranges of environmental conditions for operation of the filters. The required range depends on whether the instrument containing the filters is designed to be operated in a controlled environment or more generally in the field. 1.6 Band-pass filters conforming to the requirements of this standard are capable of providing frequency-band-filtered spectral information for a wide variety of signals, for example, time-varying, intermittent or steady; broadband or discrete frequency; and long or short durations.

This part of IEC 60118 gives recommendations for the measurement of the performance characteristics of air-conduction hearing aids of a particular model for production, supply and delivery quality assurance purposes. The manufacturer will normally assign nominal values. This standard does not relate to mechanical or environmental tests. It should not be used as the basis for the exchange of information about hearing aid characteristics in general, nor is it intended to be used as a predictor for real-ear performance. NOTE Terms such as "manufacturer" and "purchaser" are used in this standard. These terms may be understood, however, to refer to the supplier and recipient respectively in any arrangement for the supply of hearing aids in which the use of this standard is called for. Though the number of measurements covered by this standard is limited, it is not intended that all measurements described herein shall be made in every case. This second edition now specifies performance requirements. Conformance to the specifications in this standard is demonstrated only when the result of a measurement, extended by the actual expanded uncertainty of measurement of the testing laboratory, lies fully within the tolerances specified in this standard extended by the values for Umax given in Table 4. In case of custom-made in-the-ear instruments, the data supplied by the manufacturer applies only to the particular hearing aid being tested.
