This International Standard specifies the principal characteristics of synchronous pulleys for use in synchronous endless belt drives for mechanical power transmission and where positive indexing or synchronization is required. NOTE These drives have been known under various names in the past, for example: timing belt drives, positive belt drives, gear belt drives. The principal characteristics include: a) tooth dimensions and tolerances; b) pulley dimensions and tolerances; c) quality specification. As far as dimensions are concerned, the pulleys specified in this International Standard are used interchangeably with the belts specified in ISO 5296.

This International Standard specifies the principal dimensional characteristics of V-ribbed pulley groove profiles, together with the corresponding endless V-ribbed belts, of PH, PJ, PK, PL and PM profiles which are used for general industrial applications. The PK belt was originally established for automotive accessory drive applications and ISO 9981 deals specifically with that particular field.

This International Standard specifies the principal characteristics of synchronous endless and open belts and pulleys of the profile systems T and AT for use in synchronous belt drives1) for mechanical power transmission and where positive indexing or synchronization can be required. The principal belt and pulley characteristics include a) nominal belt tooth dimensions, c) belt length and width dimensions, e) pulley groove dimensions and tolerances, b) belt tooth pitch spacing, d) belt length measurement specifications, f) pulley diameter and width dimensions and tolerances, and g) pulley quality specification. The belts of the profile systems T and AT are made of polyurethane with high-tension fine steel cord tension members in most cases. As far as certain forces are given in this International Standard, these values are only valid for this kinds of belt. For polyurethane belts with different tensile cords, i.e. aramid or rubber belts reinforced with glass fibre, the values can be different. It is intended that the user and the manufacturer agree about suitable values. Open belts made of thermoplastic polyurethane can be spliced to work as endless belts in conveyor applications. In this case, the tolerances are not valid for the splicing area of the endless spliced belt.

This International Standard specifies the maximum electrical resistance of antistatic endless synchronous belts and a corresponding laboratory method of measurement. The test is intended to ensure that the belt is sufficiently conductive to dissipate charges of electricity which may form in it in service. The application of this International Standard is limited to cases of dispute about new belts intended for use in an explosive atmosphere, in situations where there is a fire risk, or wherever a static discharge cannot be permitted. The decision is left to national standards or to agreement between interested parties as to whether the test should be carried out on each belt in a batch or on only a percentage of the batch.
