This part of ISO 1641 specifies the general dimensions of the following milling cutters with plain cylindrical, flatted cylindrical and threaded shanks: — end mills, flat-ended or ball-nosed — standard series and long series; — slot drills — short series and standard series. The dimensional characteristics of cylindrical shanks are in accordance with ISO 3338-1, ISO 3338-2 NOTE These same milling cutters with Morse taper shanks having a tapped hole are dealt with in ISO 1641-2, those with 7/24 taper shanks in ISO 1641-3. This part of ISO 1641 does not apply to solid hard metal end mills and slot drills.

This International Standard applies to inserted tooth cutters mounted on centring arbors having a 7/24 taper. These cutters are equipped either with high speed steel inserted teeth or with inserted teeth with brazed carbide tips. It concerns — firstly, the so-called "single purpose mounting" milling cutter, arbor located, to be used with a well-defined spindle nose having a 7/24 taper; — secondly, the so-called "dual purpose mounting" milling cutter, arbor located, to be used with both spindle nose No. 50 and spindle nose No. 60 having a 7/24 taper. Cutter bodies for single purpose mounting, having outside diameters of cutter bodies or nominal cutting diameters, D, from 160 to 630 mm, are intended to equip spindle noses Nos. 40 - 45 — 50 — 55 or 60 having a 7/24 taper; those for dual purpose mounting, having diameter D between 315 and 630 mm, are intended to equip either No. 50 or No. 60 spindle noses having a 7/24 taper. Dimensions for centring arbors and fitting dimensions for fixation are given in ISO 2940/I.

This International Standard specifies the dimensions of tapered die-sinking cutters with plain parallel or parallel flatted shanks. These cutters are in particular intended for directly obtaining clearances of moulds, patterns and dies, when these exceed 2° 52’. This International Standard applies to flat-end cutters and bal I-nosed cutters. Three types of cutters are standardized : short type, medium type, and long type in conjunction with the useful length I. Parallel shanks are in accordance with ISO 3338/I and II.

This International Standard specifies the dimensions for interchangeability between the cutter and the arbor or mandrel, i.e. the diameter of the bore and the arbor or mandrel and elements of the drive, whether by keying or tenon. It applies to all types of milling cutters mounted on cutter arbors or mandrels. Two groups of tables have been established, relating respectively to the key drive and the tenon drive. Tables giving the conversion of the metric values into inches are given in annex A.
