This part of ISO 14713 provides guidelines and recommendations regarding the general principles of design that are appropriate for articles to be sherardized for corrosion protection. The protection afforded by the sherardized coating to the article will depend upon the method of application of the coating, the design of the article and the specific environment to which the article is exposed. The sherardized article can be further protected by application of additional coatings (outside the scope of this part of ISO 14713), such as organic coatings (wet paints or powder coatings). When applied to sherardized articles, this combination of coatings is often known as a “duplex system”. General guidance on this subject can be found in ISO 12944-5 and EN 13438. The maintenance of corrosion protection in service for steel with sherardized coatings is outside the scope of this part of ISO 14713. Specific product-related requirements (e.g. for sherardized coatings on fasteners or tubes, etc.) will take precedence over these general recommendations.

This part of ISO 14713 provides guidelines and recommendations regarding the general principles of design which are appropriate for articles to be zinc coated for corrosion protection and the level of corrosion resistance provided by zinc coatings applied to iron or steel articles, exposed to a variety of environments. Initial protection is covered in relation to — available standard processes, — design considerations, and — environments for use. This part of ISO 14713 applies to zinc coatings applied by the following processes: a) hot dip galvanized coatings (applied after fabrication); b) hot dip galvanized coatings (applied onto continuous sheet); c) sherardized coatings; d) thermal sprayed coatings; e) mechanically plated coatings; f) electrodeposited coatings. These guidelines and recommendations do not deal with the maintenance of corrosion protection in service for steel with zinc coatings. Guidance on this subject can be found in ISO 12944-5 and ISO 12944-8. NOTE There are a variety of product-related standards (e.g. for nails, fasteners, ductile iron pipes, etc.) which provide specific requirements for the applied zinc coating systems which go beyond any general guidance presented in this part of ISO 14713. These specific product-related requirements will take precedence over these general recommendations

This International Standard specifies the requirements for electrodeposited gold and gold alloy coatings for electrical, electronic and other engineering applications on metallic and non-metallic substrates. It also specifies test methods for measuring the properties of the coatings. Although this International Standard does not specify the condition, finish or surface roughness of the basis material prior to electroplating, the appearance and serviceability of electroplated gold or gold alloy coatings depends on the condition of the basis material. It is essential that the purchaser specify the surface finish and roughness of the basis material in order to conform to the product requirements. This International Standard does not apply to coatings on threaded articles or to coatings on sheet or strip in non-fabricated form.

This International Standard specifies a method of revealing discontinuities and porosity in metallic coatings, where they penetrate the coating layer or layers down to a silver, copper or copper-alloy substrate. This method is especially useful for coatings consisting of single or combined layers of any coating that does not significantly tarnish in a reduced-sulfur atmosphere, such as gold, nickel, tin, tin-lead palladium and their alloys. This test method is designed to show whether or not the coating meets the requirement concerning an acceptable porosity level specified by the user. The value specified is usually determined by user's experience to be acceptable for the intended application. Recent reviews of porosity testing and test methods can be found in the literature [1],[2]. An ISO general guide to porosity tests for metallic and other inorganic coatings is available as ISO 10308:1995, Metallic coatings — Review of porosity tests.

1.1 This International Standard specifies the apparatus and the procedure for assessment of the resistance of metal surfaces to corrosion and tarnish in atmospheres containing volatile sulphides, carried out in accordance with coating or product specifications. 1.2 The method is applicable to the assessment of the efficacy of tarnish-preventing treatments applied to silver or copper and to the detection of discontinuities in precious metal coatings on these metals.

This International Standard specifies a method for the measurement of the local thickness of metallic coatings by examination of cross-sections with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). It is destructive and has an uncertainty of less than 10 % or 0,1 μm, whichever is greater. It can be used for thicknesses up to several millimetres, but it is usually more practical to use a light microscope (ISO 1463) when applicable

1.1 This International Standard specifies a rapid and accurate method for evaluating the corrosion resistance characteristics of copper-nickel-chromium and nickel-chromium electrodeposits on steel or zinc-base die castings designed for outdoor service. It does not prescribe exposure periods to be used for a specific product, nor the interpretation to be given to the results. 1.2 The suitability of this test and correlation of results with outdoor service experience should be determined before it is specified for coating systems or materials other than those described in 1.1. 1.3 Test conditions are provided[1] to electrolytically dissolve the underlying coatings of nickel through discontinuities in the chromium overlay (whilst not attacking the chromium) at such a rate that electrolysis for 2 min produces about the same extent of corrosion as does 1 year of service[2][3]. The same acceleration of corrosion in the EC test over the rate in outdoor service is maintained on specimens where the exposed nickel area increases rapidly (such as on those with high discontinuity density) by changing from constant potential control to constant current control when a predetermined current density is attained on the specimen surface.

This International Standard specifies a method of revealing pores or other discontinuities, when testing metallic coatings, that are not visibly affected by ferricyanide and chloride ions during the test period and that are cathodic to iron and steel. This method is especially useful for thick, hard chromium coatings used for wear resistance. NOTE 1 With some coating materials a very thin layer is dissolved by the sodium chloride solution during a 10 minute application period (see 5.2.3). The impact of such dissolution is that potential porosity, i.e. pores that have been covered over by very thin layers, are sometimes re-exposed. Experience has shown that such potential porosity is frequently re-exposed during actual service.

This International Standard describes a coulometric method, by anodic dissolution, for measuring the thickness of metallic coatings. It is only applicable to conductive coatings. Typical combinations of coatings and substrates that can be tested by this method are given in Table 1. Other combinations may be tested with electrolytes in current use (see Annex A), or new electrolytes may be developed for them but, in both cases, it is necessary to verify the suitability of the complete system. This International Standard is also applicable to multi-layer systems, e.g Cu-Ni-Cr (see also 8.5). It may be used to measure the thickness of coatings applied by various means, if due account is taken of special features such as the presence of an alloy layer. In some cases, the presence and thickness of diffusion layers can also be measured. It can also be used to measure the thickness of coatings on cylindrical specimens and wires (see 8.7).

WARNING Problems concerning protection of personnel against X-rays are not covered by this International Standard. For information on this important aspect, reference should be made to current international and national standards, and to local regulations, where these exist. 1.1 This International Standard specifies methods for measuring the thickness of metallic coatings by the use of X-ray spectrometric methods. 1.2 The measuring methods to which this International Standard applies are fundamentally those that determine the mass per unit area. Using a knowledge of the density of the coating material, the results of measurements can also be expressed as linear thickness of the coating. 1.3 The measuring methods permit simultaneous measurement of coating systems with up to three layers, or simultaneous measurement of thickness and compositions of layers with up to three components. 1.4 The practical measurement ranges of given coating materials are largely determined by the energy of the characteristic X-ray fluorescence to be analysed and by the acceptable measurement uncertainty and can differ depending upon the instrument system and operating procedure used.

This International Standard specifies requirements for aluminium coatings applied by physical vapour-deposition techniques to mild steels, low-alloy steels, high-strength steels, corrosion-resisting steels, aluminium alloys, titanium alloys and other materials, as appropriate. Physical vapour-deposited coatings of aluminium are not suitable for steels having tensile strengths greater than 1 400 MPa, because of the possibility of hydrogen embrittlement due to corrosion in service or storage, or as a result of excessive cathodic protection.
