This International Standard gives guidelines for scintillation detectors and scintillators nomenclature (identification) and standard dimensions of scintillators. This International Standard is applicable to all types of solid organic and inorganic scintillators used in detectors for scintillation counting and spectrometry. The object of this standard is to define a standardized nomenclature for scintillation detectors in which most of the properties can be found. The object of this standard is to standardize the dimensions of bare scintillators in order to facilitate interchangeability of non-encapsulated scintillators and to facilitate intercomparisons of measurements with encapsulated scintillators. Liquid scintillators are not addressed by this standard. NOTE The identification labels laid down in Clause 2 of the present standard include certain dimensions which may be expressed in millimetres or inches. The SI system recommends the use of millimetres rather than inches.

This International Standard is applicable to high-purity germanium crystals used for radiation detectors for gamma-rays and X-rays. Such germanium is monocrystalline and has a net concentration of fewer than 1011 electrically active impurity centers per cm3, usually of the order of 1010 cm–3. This International Standard specifies terminology and test methods for measurements of basic characteristics of high-purity germanium crystals. These characteristics are net electrically active impurity concentrations (hereinafter (NA – ND)), deep-level impurity-centre concentration and crystallographic quality of crystals. These test methods are not mandatory but have found general use in the industry and provide verifiable and desired information to the detector manufacturer. Test methods for completed assembled germanium detectors are given in IEC 60973 and IEC 60759.

This International Standard establishes test procedures for photomultiplier tubes (PMT) for scintillation and Cherenkov detectors. This standard is applicable to photomultiplier tubes for scintillation and Cherenkov detectors. Photomultiplier tubes are extensively used in scintillation and Cherenkov counting, both in the detection and analysis of ionizing radiation and for other applications. For such uses, various characteristics are of particular importance and require additional tests to those conducted to measure the general characteristics of PMT. This has made desirable the establishment of standard test procedures so that measurements of these specific characteristics may have the same significance to all manufacturers and users. The tests described in this standard for PMT to be used in scintillation detectors are supplementary to those tests described in IEC 60306-4, which covers the basic characteristics commonly requiring specification for photomultiplier tubes. This recommendation is not intended to imply that all tests and procedures described herein are mandatory for every application, but only that those tests carried out on PMT for scintillation and Cherenkov detectors should be performed in accordance with the procedures given in this standard.

This International Standard applies to the manufacture and installation of electrical measuring systems and instruments utilizing radioactive sources (radiometric gauges, hereinafter called gauges). It also applies to source housings intended for use in the aforementioned measuring systems. This standard applies to equipment, which is not related to power production or to the fuel cycle. It does not apply to portable gauges which, because of their construction and purposes for use, are intended to be operated as mobile equipment and it does not apply to gauges operated with X-ray tubes, but it can be analogously applicable to these gauges. The object of this standard is to specify constructional requirements for the design of instruments utilizing radioactive sources in regard of radiation protection. This standard does not take into account mechanical or electrical hazards.

This International Standard applies to solid-state photodiodes (PD) and solid-state photodiode arrays (PDA) used in scintillation detectors or in Cherenkov detectors. Avalanche photodiodes (APD) are also covered by the test methods recommended in this standard, but they need some additional specific tests also described in this standard. Not all tests described in this standard are mandatory, but tests that are used to specify performance should be carried out in accordance with the procedures described herein. The intent of this standard is to establish standard test procedures for photodiodes used in scintillation detectors and to define the parameters which shall be provided by the supplier for each type of photodiode.

This International Standard is applicable to the radiological safety of portable handheld X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis equipment utilizing a miniature X-ray tube as the source of ionizing radiation for industrial applications. The following are beyond the scope of this standard: a) portable XRF analysis equipment utilizing a radioactive source(s); b) large fixed installation XRF analysis equipment utilizing an X-ray tube; c) veterinary and medical applications for portable XRF analysis. The object of this standard is to establish performance specifications for general radiation, electrical, safety and environmental characteristics of the design and operation, and test methods in relation to radiological safety for portable XRF analysis equipment utilizing a miniature X-ray tube. The proposed performance specifications are aimed at minimizing and avoiding the health risk associated with the use of these devices. Analytical performance specifications are beyond the scope of this standard. Portable XRF analyzers utilizing low power, miniature X-ray tubes as sources of ionizing radiation represent a new class of industrial equipment. The miniature X-ray tube replaces the small radioisotope sources (e.g., Fe-55, Co-57, Cd-109, Am-241 and Cm-244) that have been used in portable analyzers for applications such as analysis of lead in paint, alloy identification, and soil screening for hazardous materials

The intent is to establish standard methods for calibration and use of alpha/beta gas proportional counters, including measurement of their characteristics. Though principally applicable to beta-ray energies in excess of 100 keV, the techniques described in this standard are also useful for beta-ray energies at lower energies, provided a higher degree of care is taken with regard to sample preparation and calibration and measurement details.

This International Standard specifies methods of calibration and routine tests of scintillation detector systems for the measurement of gamma-ray energies and emission rates of radionuclides and the assay of radioactivity. This International Standard is applicable to scintillation detector systems based on inorganic scintillators for photon measurements. Typical applications include radionuclide identification and assay in various industrial, environmental, and medical applications. The detector system consists of three major components: a scintillating material that produces photons of light when ionizing radiation interacts with it; one or more photomultipliers or photodiodes, optically coupled to the scintillator, which convert the light photons to an amplified electrical pulse or pulses; and associated electronic instrumentation which powers the photomultiplier and processes the output signal. Both energy calibration and efficiency calibration are covered. The following three techniques are considered: a) total spectrum counting (see 3.1) which employs a system that counts all pulses above a low-energy threshold (see 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3); b) single-channel analyzer (SCA) counting (see 3.2) which employs a system with a counting channel established through upper and lower energy boundaries (see 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3); c) multichannel analyzer counting (see 3.3) which employs a system in which multiple counting windows are utilized. This technique allows measurements for which the continuum under the total absorption peak may be subtracted without introducing unacceptable error. In case of overlapping peaks in the spectrum, a multichannel analyzer (MCA) with access to a peak deconvolution program is necessary. This case is not covered by this standard.
