This Recommendation applies to the procedures for determination of permittivity and dissipation factor and of quantities calculated from them, such as loss index, within the frequency range 15 Hz to 300 MHz approximately. Some of the methods described in this Recommendation can, with special precautions, be used for measurements at frequencies considerably lower or higher than the given limits. Liquids and fusible materials, as well as solid materials, can be measured by the methods described. The measured values are dependent on physical conditions such as frequency, temperature and moisture content, and in special cases, on field strength as well. In some cases, tests at voltages exceeding 1 000 V may introduce effects not related to permittivity and dielectric dissipation factor, and are not described here.

This part of IEC 60455 relates to resin based reactive compounds and their components used for electrical insulation. All reactive compounds are solvent-free and may contain reactive diluents and fillers. The reactions involved in curing are polymerization and/or cross linking. This standard does not relate to reactive compounds used as coating powders. NOTE – It is intended to draw up specifications for coating powders as a separate IEC Standard having a different number. These materials may be used for a range of applications, of which common ones are shown in table 1.

This part of IEC 60216 covers minimum performance requirements for ventilated and electrically heated precision ovens for thermal endurance evaluation of electrical insulating materials and other appropriate applications. It covers ovens designed to operate over all or part of the temperature range from 20 K above room temperature up to 300 °C. Two possible methods of achieving the required performance are described: a) where the required performance is achieved by precise control of temperature in a simple single chamber oven, i.e. upgraded versions of ovens conforming to IEC 60216-4-1, and, otherwise, b) where the required performance is achieved by utilizing a second chamber (iso-box), mounted within the chamber of a single-chamber oven, the purpose of which is to reduce the magnitude of any temperature changes to an acceptable level whilst maintaining the required levels of air change and circulation. NOTE 1 Experience has shown that employment of an iso-box is an economical and practical means of meeting the requirements for a precision oven. NOTE 2 It is recommended that a precision oven rather than a standard oven is used when the expected halving interval is less than 10 K (20 kh to 10 kh) in order to increase the precision of the measured temperature index and halving interval to a reasonable level.

This part of IEC 60243 provides test methods for the determination of short-time electric strength of solid insulating materials at power frequencies between 48 Hz and 62 Hz. This standard does not cover the testing of liquids and gases, although these are specified and used as impregnates or surrounding media for the solid insulating materials being tested. This International Standard gives the accepted conditions of exposure time, temperature, atmospheric humidity and liquid immersion for use in testing solid electrical insulating materials. The range is sufficiently wide to enable suitable conditions to be selected so that either of the primary objects, set out below as a) and b), of conditioning can be achieved. These objectives aim to obtain greater reproducibility of test results by: a) partly counteracting the variations of the properties of the material due to the past history of the test specimens (often known as "normalizing", here called preconditioning), and b) ensuring uniformity of conditions during the testing. This standard is not intended to be applied for determining the influence of exposure to certain temperatures and humidity or immersions in liquids, on the properties of a material. Procedures pertaining to the effect of an environment on a material are given in various parts of IEC 60068.

This part of IEC TS 61244, which is a technical specification, reviews experimental techniques to quantitatively monitor the effects when oxygen is present during ageing of polymers in various environments including temperature, radiation or ultraviolet. Inhomogenous ageing effects caused by diffusion-limited oxidation are often encountered and provide theoretical equations to estimate their importance. These effects make it difficult to understand the ageing process and to extrapolate accelerated exposure to long-term conditions. It is widely known that mechanical properties degrade prior to electrical properties. These changes are consequences of chemical changes such as oxidation. In this technical specification, only mechanical or chemical monitoring techniques are of interest. This technical specification does not deal with electrical monitoring techniques.
