This International Standard gives guidance for the use of passive a.c. harmonic filters and shunt capacitors for the limitation of harmonics and power factor correction intended to be used in industrial applications, at low and high voltages. The measures proposed in this standard are applicable to harmonic orders greater than 1 and up to and including 25. The following capacitors are excluded from this standard: – capacitors for inductive heat generating plants, operating at frequencies between 40 Hz and 24 000 Hz (see IEC 60110 [1]*); – series capacitors for power systems (see IEC 60143 [2]); – coupling capacitors and capacitor dividers (see IEC 60358 [3]); – power electronic capacitors (see IEC 61071 [4]); – AC motor capacitors (see IEC 60252 [5]); – capacitors for use in tubular fluorescent and other discharge lamp circuits (see IEC 61048 [6] and IEC 61049 [7]); – capacitors for the suppression of radio interference; – capacitors intended to be used in various types of electric equipment and thus considered as components; – capacitors intended for use with d.c. voltage superimposed on a.c. voltage; – capacitors intended for use with arc furnaces. The object of this standard is to identify problems and give recommendations for general applications of capacitors and a.c. harmonic filters in a.c. power systems affected by the presence of harmonic voltages and currents.

This part of IEC 60110 is applicable both to indoor capacitor units and indoor capacitor banks intended to be used, particularly, for power factor correction in induction heating, melting, stirring or casting installations, and similar applications with controlled or adjustable a.c. voltage systems in a frequency range up to 50 kHz, and with a rated voltage not exceeding 3,6 kV. Additional requirements for capacitors protected by internal element fuses are given in IEC 60110-2. This part of IEC 60947 specifies requirements for protective conductor terminal blocks with PE function up to 120 mm2 (250 kcmil) and for protective conductor terminal blocks with PEN function equal to and above 10 mm2 (AWG 8) with screw-type or screwless-type clamping units, primarily intended for industrial applications. This standard may be used as guide for − protective conductor terminal blocks requiring the fixing of special devices to the conductors, for example quick connect terminations or wrapped connections, etc.; – protective conductor terminal blocks providing direct contact to the conductors by means of edges or points penetrating the insulation, for example insulation displacement connections, etc. Where applicable in this standard, the term “clamping unit” has been used instead of the term “terminal”. This part of IEC 60947 applies to fuse terminal blocks with screw-type or screwless-type clamping units for the connection of rigid (solid or stranded) or flexible copper conductors for the reception of cartridge fuse-links in accordance with IEC 60127-2, intended primarily for industrial or similar use in circuits not exceeding 1 000 V a.c., up to 1 000 Hz or 1 500 V d.c., and having a maximum short-circuit breaking capacity of 1 500 A. This International Standard applies to electromechanical air break contactors for household and similar purposes provided with main contacts intended to be connected to circuits the rated voltage of which does not exceed 440 V a.c. (between phases) with rated operational currents less than or equal to 63 A for utilization category AC-7a and 32 A for utilization categories AC-7b and AC-7c, and rated conditional short-circuit current less than or equal to 6 kA. The contactors dealt with in this standard are not normally designed to interrupt short-circuit currents. Therefore, suitable short-circuit protection (see 9.3.4) shall form part of the installation. This standard does not apply to – contactors complying with IEC 60947-4-1; – semiconductor contactors; – contactors designed for special applications; – auxiliary contacts of contactors. These are dealt with in IEC 60947-5-1. This standard states 1) the characteristics of contactors. 2) the conditions with which contactors shall comply with reference to: a) their operation and behaviour; b) their dielectric properties; c) the degrees of protection provided by their enclosures, where applicable; d) their construction; e) their electromagnetic compatibility characteristics. 3) the tests intended for confirming that these conditions have been met, and the methods to be adopted for these tests. 4) the test sequences and the number of samples. 5) the information to be given with contactors or in the manufacturer's literature.

IEC 60358-1:2012 applies to capacitors, with rated voltage >1 000 V, connected line to ground with the low voltage terminal either permanently earthed or connected to devices, for applications listed hereunder and other similar uses. This standard serves as basic standard for the coupling capacitor, the different parts of this standard will present the supplementary specifications and tests, for example IEC 60358-2, IEC 60358-3 or IEC 60358-4. This standard cancels and replaces the second edition of IEC 60358 (1990), and constitutes a technical revision. This edition of IEC 60358-1 includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the former edition of IEC 60358: - the standard has been split into different parts; Part 1 is the general rules and Parts 2, 3, 4 will be specific to the PLC, filters and dividers applications. - the routine and type test have been reviewed and are presented in Figure 2.
