IEC 60512-9-5:2020 is available as IEC 60512-9-5:2020 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition.IEC 60512-9-5:2020 when required by the detail product specification, is used for testing connectors or solderless connections within the scope of technical committee 48. It may also be used for similar devices when specified in a detail product specification. The object of this document is to detail a standard method for subjecting solderless connections to thermal stress conditioning by cyclic current loading. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2010. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - added method B and renamed the former test method as method A, to provide an alternative with more adjustable time “ON” and “OFF” for products with larger thermal mass. - added introduction to provide background of this revision.

This part of IEC 60512 defines a standard test method for measuring the shielding effectiveness SE of a shielded connector@ or of a connector not provided with integral shield once fitted with a shielding accessory and terminated with a screened cable. The complete assembly has a continuous 360??hielding capability throughout its length. NOTE 1 Practically@ continuous 360??hielding is not always achievable based on the geometry of the connector. NOTE 2 Shielding?? is used in this document with the same meaning as ??screening??. This test method can be applied to shielded connectors and to connector accessories with shielding capability. The following different connector designs can be tested: ?C circular connectors; ?C rectangular connectors; ?C connectors for printed boards; ?C connector shielding accessories. NOTE 3 For the definition of ??accessory?? see IEV 581-24-10. A shielding accessory i.e. an accessory that confers shielding to a non-inherently shielded connector@ may be a suitable set of shielded housings providing electrical continuity@ along the mated connector set@ between the screen of the (screened) cable at the cable outlet of the free cable connector housing and the metallic mounting surface for the fixed connector housing. The free connector housing is provided with a cable screen clamp. This test method utilizes the principle that the intrinsic shielding property of the connector/ accessory/cable assembly is its surface transfer impedance ZT which can be expressed as the longitudinal voltage inside the shield@ relative to the current flow on the outside shell. This test method is based on two impedance-matched circuits. See Figure 1 for the measurement principle. The connector specimen under test is integrated into the secondary circuit 02. The impedance-matched injection line of the primary circuit 01@ which activates the electromagnetic field@ runs parallel to the surface of the specimen under test. This test is also suitable for measuring the shielding effectiveness of a connector fitted with triaxial contacts terminated with shielded@ twisted pair cables@ as used in data bus systems. NOTE 4 This standard has been adopted by ASD-STAN (formerly known as AECMA) as EN 2591-212 .

1.1 This test method covers the force versus resistance measurement of a membrane force sensor (MFS) where the electrical resistance decreases as the force on the sensor is increased. 1.2 An MFS may or may not be electrically open in its static state. This depends on the attributes required for the application. If the MFS has a measureable resistance in static state, it was most likely designed to be used as a variable resistor, not as a normally open switch. A high but measurable resistance, in static state, may still be considered an open switch if the resistance is above the closed resistance threshold recognized by the interface electronics. 1.3 Special printed conductive polymer inks or characteristics, or both, of the sensor design are used in MFS to achieve variable resistance when compressed. As force is applied to the MFS the resistance continues to decrease, but not linearly, until a point where additional force does not change the resistance appreciably. Ideally, when force is removed from the MFS the resistance will return to, or close to, its original value. 1.4 Materials other than conductive polymers can be used in an MFS and also exhibit reduced resistance with increasing force. 1.5 This test method should not be confused with Test Method F2592 for measuring the force-displacement characteristics of a membrane switch (MS) that is designed for momentary closure. Although the resistance of a MS does change during contact closure the change from high resistance to contact resistance is very sudden and additional force does not have a significant effect on the resistance; that is, an MS is not designed to be used as a variable resistor. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
