1 This standard applies to 60-250°C single- or multiple-conductor jacketed or unjacketed, integral or nonintegral cables and single or multiple coaxial cables for telephone and other communication circuits such as voice, data, and audio for on-premise customer systems. These cables ale not prohibited from containing one or more optical fibre members. For the purpose of this standard, a coaxial cable or coaxial member conductor is a single conductor with a shield. For the purpose of this standard, a single- or multiple-conductor unjacketed cable is a cross-connect wire. 2 This standard applies to communications cables that are intended primarily for installation in accordance with Section 60 of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), Part 1, and Article 800 of the National Electrical Code (NEC) . They are rated for 300 V applications but are not so marked.

This sectional specification relates to IEC 61156-1: Multicore and symmetrical pair/quad cables for digital communications - Part 1: Generic specification. The cables described herein are specifically intended for horizontal floor wiring in class D, E and F channels, as defined in ISO/IEC 11801:2000, Information technology - Generic cabling for customer premises (see Table 1). It covers individually screened (STP), common screened (FTP) and unscreened (UTP) pairs or quads having a pair count of four pairs or less. The transmission characteristics of the cables are specified at 20 ℃. See Annex A for a discussion of cable performance at temperatures higher than 20 ℃. The designation "Category 5e" is used herein to describe an enhanced Category 5 cable and is used in the same context as "Category 5" in ISO/IEC 11801. This enhanced cable is designated Category 5e to differentiate it from the Category 5 cables described in IEC 61156-2, 61156-3, and 61156-4. Although both Category 5 and 5e cables are characterized to 100 MHz and can be used in Class D channels, Category 5e has additional requirements, as compared to Category 5, which make it preferred for use in systems utilizing four pairs transmitting simultaneously in both directions. These cables can be used for various communication systems that are under development and which use as many as four pairs simultaneously. In this sense, this sectional specification provides the cable characteristics required by system developers to evaluate new systems. The cables covered by this sectional specification are intended to operate with voltages and currents normally encountered in communication systems. These cables are not intended to be used in conjunction with low impedance sources, for example, the electric power supplies of public utility mains. Though the recommended temperature range during installation is 0 ℃ +50 ℃, the actual temperature range during installation should be indicated in the detail specification.

This sectional specification relates to IEC 61156-1: Multicore and symmetrical pair/quad cables for digital communications - Part 1: Generic specification. The cables described herein are specifically intended to construct patch, equipment, and work area cords for class D, E arid F channels, as defined in IEC 11801:2000, Information technology - Generic cabling for customer premises (see Table 1). It covers individually screened (STP), common screened (FTP) and unscreened (UTP) pairs or quads having a pair count of four pairs or less. The transmission characteristics of the cables are specified at 20 ℃. See Annex A of IEC 61156-5 for a discussion of cable performance at temperatures higher than 20 ℃. Although both Category 5 and 5e cables are characterized to 100 MHz and can in used for Class D channels, Category 5e has additional requirements, as compared to Category 5, which make it preferred for use in systems utilizing four pairs transmitting simultaneously in both directions. These cables are intended for various new communication systems that are under development and which use as many as four pairs simultaneously. The cables referenced in this technical specification are intended for generic cabling systems, having solid conductors and with a pair count of four pairs or less. Their electrical performance requirements are laid out such that a margin of 3 dB is guaranteed for the channel, which approximately corresponds to 10 dB per 100 m of cable, if the connecting hardware and the patch cords are taken into account. The cables may be provided without a screen, with a common screen or with individual screens over the pairs. These cables are intended for various new communication systems, which are under development, and which may use as many as four pairs simultaneously. In this sense, the present specification is intended as a working document for system developers, to allow the evaluation of complete systems from a technical and also from an economic point of view. The cables covered by this specification are intended to operate with the voltage and current levels normally encountered in communication systems. These cables are not intended to be used in conjunction with low impedance sources, for example the electric power supplies of public utility mains. The recommended temperature range during installation may be indicated in the detail specification. The operating temperature range is at least -20 ℃ to +60 ℃ in order to ensure that a connected link remains operational under normal temperature variations. (The output and receive amplifiers go, upon power-up, through a training which takes the line condition into account and compensates for it. After training, the amplifiers are locked, to maintain the established parameters. If the line conditions are changed beyond the specified level, then the bit error rate of the linecard exceeds the permissible threshold and the link is interrupted.)

This part of IEC 61156 which is a generic specification applies to Capability Approval requirements for multicore and symmetrical pair/quad cables for digital communications as specified in IEC 61156-1 series. It specifies the requirements for a manufacturer seeking approval of his capability to design (if applicable), manufacture, inspect, test and release multicore and symmetrical pair/quad cables for digital communications as defined in his Capability Manual. The manufacturer's approval, which embodies all the relevant requirements of ISO 9001 and ISO 9002, is a prerequisite for granting Capability Approval but a manufacturer may apply for manufacturer's approval and Capability Approval concurrently. NOTE 1 This standard was written, to be used in case of a third party certification. However, it may be used as the basis for a second party or for self-certification. NOTE 2 When certification is required, Capability Approval should be used according to that which is indicated below. It may also be used for a second party or for self-certification.
