The international community has decided to make this standard available only in the English language version. It has been adopted as a National Standard of Canada on this basis. This National Standard of Canada is equivalent to International Standard ISO/IEC 10168-4:1996. 1 Scope This part of ISO/IEC 10168 defines: a) procedures for a single protocol for the transfer of data and control information from one test management entity (the Lower Tester) to a peer test management entity (the Upper Tester); b) the structure and encoding of the test management protocol data units used to operate the test management protocol. These procedures are defined in term of: a) the service primitives sent and received by the Upper Tester; b) the Session Layer - Test Management Protocol Data Unit sent and received by the Upper Tester.

This Recommendation | International Standard specifies: a) procedures for the connectionless transmission of data and protocol control information from one session entity to a peer session entity; b) the encoding of the session protocol data units used for the transmission of data and control information; c) procedures for the correct interpretation of session protocol control information; and d) the functional requirements for implementations claiming conformance to this Recommendation | International Standard. The procedures are defined in terms of: e) the interactions among peer session entities through the exchange of session protocol data units; f) the interactions between a session entity and a session service user through the exchange of session service primitives; and g) the interactions between a session entity and a transport provider through the exchange of transport service primitives. This Recommendation | International Standard specifies a connectionless session protocol. A connection-oriented session protocol is specified in ITU-T Rec. X.225 | ISO/IEC 8327-1.

This Recommendation | International Standard provides the Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) proforma for the connection-oriented Session protocol specification ITU-T Rec. X.225 |ISO/IEC 8327-1. This PICS proforma is in compliance with the relevant requirements, and in accordance with the relevant guidance for a PICS proforma, given in ITU-T Rec. X.296 | ISO/EEC 9646-7. Detail of the use of this proforma is provided in this Recommendation 1 International Standard. The supplier of an implementation which is claimed to conform to ITU-T Rec. X.22S | ISO/IEC 8327-1 is required to complete a copy of the PICS proforma provided in Annex A, and is required to provide the information necessary to uniquely identify both the supplier and the implementation.

This Recommendation | International Standard defines in an abstract way the externally visible service provided by the OSI Session Layer in terms of: a) the primitive actions and events of the service; b) the parameter data associated with each primitive action and event; c) the relationship between, and the valid sequence of these actions and events. The service defined in this Recommendation | International Standard is that which is provided by the OSI session protocol (in conjunction with the transport service) and which may be used by the OSI presentation protocol. This Recommendation | International Standard does not specify individual implementations or products, nor does it constrain the implementation of entities and interfaces within a computer system. There is, therefore, no conformance to this Recommendation | International Standard. The text pertaining to the symmetric synchronization functional unit is not applicable to the support of ITU-T applications.
