Scope 1.1 This ITU-T Recommendation | International Standard defines (in an abstract way) the externally visible service provided by the OSI Presentation Layer in terms of a) the primitive actions and events at the user/service boundary; b) the parameter data associated with each primitive action and event; c) the relationship between, and the valid sequences of, those actions and events. 1.2 The service defined in this ITU-T Recommendation | International Standard is the connection-oriented service which is provided by the OSI connection-oriented presentation protocol and the the connectionless service which is provided by the OSI connectionless presentation protocol, each in conjunction with the OSI session-service. The connection-oriented presentation service defined in this ITU-T Recommendation | International Standard may be used by an OSI application protocol defined for connection-oriented transmission. The connectionless presentation service defined in this ITU-T Recommendation | International Standard may be used by an OSI application protocol defined for connectionless transmission. 1.3 This ITU-T Recommendation | International Standard does not specify individual implementations or products, nor does it constrain the implementation of entities and interfaces within a computer system. There is, therefore, no conformance to this ITU-T Recommendation | International Standard.

This Recommendation | International Standard1)specifies a) procedures for the transfer of data and control information from one presentation-entity to a peer presentation-entity ; b) the structure and encoding of the presentation-protocol-data-units used for the transfer of data and control information. The procedures are defined in terms of c) the interactions between peer presentation-entities through the exchange of esentation-protocol-data-units; d) the interactions between a presentation-entity and the presentation-service-user in the same system through the exchange of presentation-service primitives; e) the interactions between a presentation-entity and the session-service-provider through the exchange of session-service primitives. These procedures are defined in the main text of this Recommendation | International Standard supplemented by state tables in Annex A. These procedures are applicable to instances of communication between systems which support the Presentation Layer of the OSI Reference Model and which wish to transfer presentation service data units using connectionless-mode presentation service primitives. This Recommendation | International Standard also specifies conformance criteria for systems implementing these procedures. It does not contain tests which can be used to demonstrate this conformance.

This Recommendation | International Standard specifies a set of Packed Encoding Rules that may be used to derive a transfer syntax for values of types defined in ITU-T Rec. X.680 | ISO/IEC 8824-1. These Packed Encoding Rules are also to be applied for decoding such a transfer syntax in order to identify the data values being transferred. The encoding rules specified in this Recommendation | International Standard: — are used at the time of communication; — are intended for use in circumstances where minimizing the size of the representation of values is the major concern in the choice of encoding rules; — allow the extension of an abstract syntax by addition of extra values, preserving the encodings of the existing values, for all forms of extension described in ITU-T Rec. X.680 | ISO/IEC 8824-1; — can be modified in accordance with the provisions of ITU-T Rec. X.695 | ISO/IEC 8825-6.

This Recommendation | International Standard defines a notation for specifying encodings of ASN.1 types or of parts of types. It provides several mechanisms for such specification, including: — direct specification of the encoding using standardized notation; — specification of the encoding by reference to standardized encoding rules; — specification of the encoding of an ASN.1 type by reference to an encoding structure; — specification of the encoding using non-ECN notation. It also provides the means to link the specification of encodings to the type definitions to which they are to be applied. ECN does not currently provide any support for specifications using the OID internationalized resource identifier type or the relative OID internationalized resource identifier type (see ITU-T Rec. X.680 | ISO/IEC 8824-1), and these are not referred to further in this Standard.

This Recommendation | International Standard provides the Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) proforma for ITU-T Rec. X.236 | ISO/IEC 9576-1 in compliance with the relevant requirements, and in accordance with the relevant guidance given in ITU-T Rec. X.296 | ISO/IEC 9646-7. Detail of the use of this proforma is provided in this Recommendation | International Standard. The supplier of an implementation which is claimed to conform to ITU-T Rec. X.236 | ISO/IEC 9576-1 is required to complete a copy of the PICS proforma provided in Annex A, and is required to provide the information necessary to identify both the supplier and the implementation.

Abstract ISO/IEC 8824-1:2008 specifies a standard notation called Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1) that is used for the definition of data types, values, and constraints on data types. ISO/IEC 8824-1:2008 •defines a number of simple types, with their tags, and specifies a notation for referencing these types and for specifying values of these types; •defines mechanisms for constructing new types from more basic types, and specifies a notation for defining such types and assigning them tags, and for specifying values of these types; •defines character sets (by reference to other ITU-T Recommendations and International Standards) for use within ASN.1. ISO/IEC 8824-1:2008 can be applied whenever it is necessary to define the abstract syntax of information. ISO/IEC 8824-1:2008 is referenced by other standards which define encoding rules for the ASN.1 types.
