This Recommendation | International Standard defines a number of object classes and name forms which may be found useful across a range of applications of the Directory. The definition of an object class involves listing a number of attribute types which are relevant to objects of that class. The definition of a name form involves naming the object class to which it applies and listing the attributes to be used in forming names for objects of that class. These definitions are used by the administrative authority which is responsible for the management of the directory information.

The Directory provides the directory capabilities required by OSI applications,OSI management processes, other OSI layer entities, and telecommunications services. Among the capabilities which it provides are those of "user-friendly naming",whereby objects can be referred to by names which are suitable for citing by human users (though not all objects need have user-friendly names); and "name-to-address mapping" which allows the binding between objects and their locations to be dynamic. The latter capability allows OSI networks, for example,to be "self-configuring" in the sense that addition, removal and the changes of object location do not affect OSI network operation.

This Recommendation |International Standard specifies the behaviour of DSAs taking part in a distributed directory consisting of multiple Directory systems agents (DSAs) and/or LDAP servers with at least one DSA. The allowed behaviour has been designed to ensure a consistent service given a wide distribution of the DIB across a distributed directory. Only the behaviour of DSAs taking part in a distributed directory is specified. The behaviour of LDAP servers are specified in relevant LDAP specifications. There are no special requirements on an LDAP server beyond those given by the LDAP specifications.

This Recommendation | International Standard addresses some of the security requirements in the areas of authentication and other security services through the provision of a set of frameworks upon which full services can be based. Specifically, this Recommendation | International Standard defines frameworks for: – public-key certificates; – attribute certificates; and – authentication services.

This Recommendation | International Standard specifies a shadow service which Directory system agents (DSAs) may use to replicate Directory information. The service allows Directory information to be replicated among DSAs to improve service to Directory users. The shadowed information is updated, using the defined protocol, thereby improving the service provided to users of the Directory.

This Recommendation | International Standard defines a Systems Management Function which may be used by an application process in a centralized or decentralized management environment to interact for the purpose of systems management, as defined by CCITT Rec. X.700 | ISO/IEC 7498-4. This Recommendation | International Standard defines the Command Sequencer which consists of generic definitions, services and functional units. This function is positioned in the application layer of ITU-T Rec. X.200 | ISO/IEC 7498-1 and is defined according to the model provided by ISO 9545. The role of systems management functions is described by ITU Rec. X.701 | ISO/IEC 10040. This Recommendation | International Standard: — establishes user requirements for the Command Sequencer; — establishes models that relate the services provided by the function to user requirements; — defines the services provided by the function; — specifies the protocol that is necessary in order to provide the services; — defines the relationship between the services and SMI operations and notifications; — defines relationships with other systems management functions; — specifies conformance requirements; — defines a scripting language for use in the command sequencer environment. This Recommendation | International Standard does not: — define the nature of any implementation intended to provide the Command Sequencer; — specify the manner in which management is accomplished by the use of the Command Sequencer; — define the nature of any instructions which result in the use of the Command Sequencer; — specify the services necessary for the establishment, normal, abnormal release of management associations.

This Technical Report defines the ISO Reference Model of Data Management. It establishes a framework for coordinating the development of existing and future standards for the management of persistent data in information systems. See Annex A for references to existing data management standards. This Technical Report defines common terminology and concepts pertinent to all data held within information systems. Such concepts are used to define more specifically the services provided by particular data management components, such as database management systems or data dictionary systems. The definition of such related services identifies interfaces which may be the subject of future standardization. This Technical Report does not specify services and protocols for data management. This Technical Report is neither an implementation specification for systems, nor a basis for appraising the conformance of implementations. The scope of this Technical Report includes processes which are concerned with handling persistent data and their interaction with processes particular to the requirements of a specific information system. This includes common data management services such as those required to define, store, retrieve, update, maintain, backup, restore, and communicate applications and dictionary data. The scope of this Technical Report includes consideration of standards for the management of data located on one or more computer systems, including services for distributed database management. This Technical Report does not include within its scope common services normally provided by an operating system including those processes which are concerned with specific types of physical storage devices, specific techniques for storing data, and specific details of communications and human computer interfaces. A data management standard defines services provided at an interface. It does not impose limitations on how processes are implemented.

This International Standard will provide users of voice messaging systems with a consistent mode of interaction in a way that is independent of the underlying system implementations. The interface is based on a set of design guidelines annexed to this International Standard. The interface supports the ability of all users described in the user-system model (see Figure 2) to access the features of voice messaging systems. In a call answering application, the interface allows callers to leave messages from all types of telephones. It also allows callers to access additional features through the use of DTMF devices. In the voice mail application, through the use of DTMF devices, the interface allows subscribers to send and receive voice messages, and to manage stored data, and allows non-subscribers to leave voice messages for subscribers. This International Standard addresses the following six functional areas: • a caller leaving a voice message, when the call is answered by a voice messaging system call answering facility; • a caller leaving a voice message, when a message is sent to a subscriber by a subscriber or nonsubscriber through direct messaging; • a subscriber listening to and processing voice messages received; • a subscriber creating and sending voice messages through the voice mail application; • the sending and receiving of messages via voice message delivery applications; and • the use of voice bulletin boards. Within these functional areas, only certain features are defined in this International Standard. However, standard-conforming systems are not limited to these functions and features, and this International Standard does not preclude alternative methods of invoking features specified in this International Standard, providing that these alternatives do not conflict with the standard interface specified for other features covered in this International Standard. In this International Standard, the direct messaging functional area is covered in the clause specifying the call answering application. In addition, this International Standard specifies two requirements to be satisfied in all voice messaging contexts, not just the application contexts specified earlier in this clause: the use of # as a delimiter (see 5.6.1), and the access to and presence of the control menu (see 5.6.2) and its associated functionality. This International Standard does not address the user/system interface for administrators, who have responsibility for the management and maintenance of the voice messaging system. This International Standard also does not address the proactive method, if any, employed by a voice messaging system to notify a user that a voice mailbox contains a message. Notification is, at present, typically achieved by a message waiting light, a distinctive dial-tone, or a pager device. This International Standard does not specify a non-DTMF user interface for Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) terminal access to voice messaging applications; however, if a user's ISDN terminal or switching equipment has the capability for full simulation of DTMF tones after call connection, the user interface specified in this International Standard will operate a conforming voice messaging system. Figure 1 shows a taxonomy of telephone-based services, with shaded boxes indicating the services within the scope of this International Standard:
