This Recommendation | International Standard provides developers of OSI Recommendations | International Standards that contain managed object definitions with generic definitions of managed object classes that will — provide common superclass definitions from which layer- or resource- specific object class definitions may be derived; — assist with the development of common elements of object class definitions across multiple layers or components of layers; — reduce duplication of effort in other working groups by identifying commonly useful definitions. To this end, this Recommendation | International Standard defines managed object classes which may be used as superclasses, using the template notation defined in CCITT Rec. X.722 | ISO/IEC 10165-4, including the definition of any packages, attributes, attribute groups, behaviour, actions, notifications and parameters that may be associated with the superclasses. It also defines functional units required by layer- or resource-specific management standards which are not defined in the CCITT Rec. X.73X | ISO/IEC 10164 series of systems management function standards. This Recommendation | International Standard is applicable to the development of any OSI Recommendation | International Standard which defines managed object classes that may be refined from the managed object classes defined in this Recommendation | International Standard. This Recommendation | International Standard does not specify or imply any constraints on the development of managed object definitions in terms of their inheritance relationships. Developers of managed object class definitions are encouraged to use the definitions contained in this Recommendation | International Standard to promote consistency between similar managed object classes; however, use of these definitions is not mandated.

This International Standard defines, in an abstract way, the externally visible Basic Class Virtual Terminal Service within the OSI Application Layer in terms of a) a model defining the interaction between users of the service; b) the primitive actions and events of the service; c) the parameter data associated with each primitive action and event; d) the relationship between, and the valid sequences of, these actions and events. The service defined in this International Standard is that which is provided by the OSI Basic Class Virtual Terminal Protocol (in conjunction with the Association Control Service Element and the Presentation Service) and which may be used by any user including other Application Service Elements. The relationship between the standards for Virtual Terminal Service, Virtual Terminal Protocol, ACSE, Presentation Layer Service and the user of the Virtual Terminal Service is shown in figure 1. This International Standard also defines two standard default virtual terminal environment profiles and describes the form of registered virtual terminal environment profiles and control objects. Virtual terminal environment profiles define sets of virtual terminal environment parameters for use in the establishment of virtual terminal associations and subsequent negotiation. This International Standard also defines a structure of ASN.1 Object Identifiers for the objects defined in this International Standard and for use in a register of virtual terminal objects.

This Recommendation | International Standard provides: a) a model for reasoning about, representing, managing, and developing re-usable specifications for relationships between resources; b) notational tools for specifying relationships, their representation, and management; c) definitions of generic management information that may be used in the representation and management of relationships; d) guidelines for the development of conformance statement proforma; e) example definitions. The general relationship model is specified in clause 7. The notation tools are specified in Annex A. The generic management information is defined in clause 8 and Annex B. The guidelines for the specification of implementation conformance statement proforma are given in Annexes C and D. An illustration of the representation methods and example definitions are presented in Annex E and Annex F respectively. A commentary on the text is included in Annex G. This Recommendation | International Standard does not provide a mechanism for the maintenance of consistency between resources that is implied by a relationship. CCITT Rec. X.732 | ISO/IEC 10164-3 specifies a model of relationships represented by attributes and a set of generic attributes for representing specific types of relationships. The modelling concepts and specification tools defined in this Recommendation | International Standard are applicable to the definition of relationships in general, and hence, are also applicable to relationships represented by attributes as modelled in CCITT Rec. X.732 | ISO/IEC 10164-3.

This Recommendation | International Standard is one of the set of Recommendations | International Standards for the OSI Management Information Service (MIS). It defines the Information Model of managed objects and their attributes that corresponds to the Information aspects of the systems management model introduced in the Systems Management Overview CCITT Rec. X.701 | ISO/IEC 10040, thus providing the modelling concepts necessary for the development of the other systems management Recommendations | International Standards. It also defines the principles of naming managed objects and attributes. This Recommendation | International Standard defines the logical structure of systems management information. In accordance with CCITT Rec. X.700 | ISO 7498-4 and X.701 | ISO/IEC 10040 management information is structured in terms of managed objects, their attributes, the management operations that can be performed upon them, and the notifications that they can emit. The set of managed objects in an open system, together with their attributes, constitutes that open system's management information base (MDB). This Recommendation | International Standard defines the concepts of managed objects in the Information Model, and prescribes the principles for naming the managed objects and their attributes so that they may be identified in and accessed by management protocols. This Recommendation | International Standard also describes the concept of managed object classes and the relationships into which managed objects and managed object classes can enter, including: inheritance, specialization, allomorphism and containment. This Recommendation | International Standard applies to all definitions of managed objects and their attributes for the purposes of systems management. NOTE — Although this Recommendation | International Standard applies to systems management, layer management, when defined, can also use this Recommendation | International Standard.

This Technical Report defines the ISO Reference Model of Data Management. It establishes a framework for coordinating the development of existing and future standards for the management of persistent data in information systems. See Annex A for references to existing data management standards. This Technical Report defines common terminology and concepts pertinent to all data held within information systems. Such concepts are used to define more specifically the services provided by particular data management components, such as database management systems or data dictionary systems. The definition of such related services identifies interfaces which may be the subject of future standardization. This Technical Report does not specify services and protocols for data management. This Technical Report is neither an implementation specification for systems, nor a basis for appraising the conformance of implementations. The scope of this Technical Report includes processes which are concerned with handling persistent data and their interaction with processes particular to the requirements of a specific information system. This includes common data management services such as those required to define, store, retrieve, update, maintain, backup, restore, and communicate applications and dictionary data. The scope of this Technical Report includes consideration of standards for the management of data located on one or more computer systems, including services for distributed database management. This Technical Report does not include within its scope common services normally provided by an operating system including those processes which are concerned with specific types of physical storage devices, specific techniques for storing data, and specific details of communications and human computer interfaces. A data management standard defines services provided at an interface. It does not impose limitations on how processes are implemented.

The ACSE supports two modes of communication: connection-mode and connectionless-mode. The ACSE service definition (see ITU-T Rec. X.217 bis | ISO/IEC 15953) includes both modes of communication. This Recommendation | International Standard only includes the connection mode of communication. This Recommendation | International Standard for the connectionless mode of communication is contained in ITU-T Rec. X.237 bis | ISO/IEC 15955. This Recommendation | International Standard defines procedures that are applicable to instances of communication between systems which wish to interconnect in an open systems interconnection environment in a connection mode. This Recommendation | International Standard includes the Kernel functional unit that is used to establish and release ASO-associations. The Authentication functional unit provides additional facilities for exchanging information in support of authentication during association establishment without adding new services. The ACSE authentication facilities can be used to support a limited class of authentication methods. The ASO-context negotiation functional unit provides the additional facility for the recipient to select the ASO-context from a list offered by the initiator during association establishment. The optional Higher Level Association functional unit provides for the facility to identify ASO-associations and transparently pass data to child ASOs and allows the ASO-context or the presentation context on an ASO-association to be modified during the lifetime of the association. This Recommendation | International Standard specifies: a) procedures for the transfer of information for ASO-association control and the authentication of ASOs and application-entities; and b) the abstract syntax for the representation of the ACSE APDUs. The ACSE procedures are defined in terms of: a) the interactions among peer ACSE protocol machines through the use of Presentation services or supporting ACSE services; and b) the interaction between an ACSE protocol machine and its service-user. This Recommendation | International Standard also specifies conformance requirements for systems implementing these procedures. It does not contain tests which can be used to demonstrate conformance.

This Recommendation | International Standard defines ACSE services for ASO-association control in an open systems interconnection environment. ACSE supports two modes of communication service: connection-mode and connectionless-mode. The ACSE connection-mode service is provided by the use of the connection-mode ACSE protocol (see ITU-T Rec. X.227 bis | ISO/IEC 15954). The ACSE connectionless-mode service (A-UNIT-DATA) is provided by the use of the connectionless-mode ACSE protocol (see ITU-T Rec. X.237 bis | ISO/IEC 15955). Five functional units are defined in the ACSE. The mandatory Kernel functional unit is used to establish and release ASO-associations. The optional Authentication functional unit provides additional facilities for exchanging information in support of authentication during association establishment without adding services. The ACSE authentication facilities may be used to support a limited class of authentication methods. The optional ASO-context negotiation functional unit allows multiple ASO-contexts to be offered during association establishment. The optional higher level association functional unit provides for the facility to identify ASO-associations and transparently pass data to child ASOs and allows the ASO-context or the presentation context on an ASO-association to be modified during the lifetime of the association. This Recommendation | International Standard does not specify individual implementations or products, nor does it constrain the implementation of entities and interfaces within a computer system. No requirement is made for conformance to this Service definition.

This part of ISO/IEC 9834 specifies the contents of register entries recording information about VTE-profiles and assigning unambiguous names of ASN.1 type OBJECT IDENTIFIER to VTE-profile definitions. The VTE-profiles in this register are defined for use with implementations of VT protocols claiming to conform to ISO 9041-1. The VTE-profile names to which this document refers are for use in fields of the VT communication protocol defined in ISO 9041-1 which need to identify the VTE-profiles defined in the register entries. A name registered in accordance with this part of ISO/IEC 9834 shall serve as an identification of the VTE-profile associated with it in the register. The presence of a register entry in the International Register carries no implications of required support for that VTE-profile in any Virtual Terminal implementation. NOTE — Nonetheless, within a VTE-profile entry, requirements may be expressed relating to implementations claiming to support that entry (such requirements are described in clause A.10).
