This part of ISO 8571 defines in an abstract way the externally visible file transfer, access and management service within the OSI Application Layer in terms of: a) the primitive actions and events of the service; b) the parameter data associated with each primitive action and event; c) the relationship between, and the valid sequences of, these actions and events. The service defined in ISO 8571-3 is that which is provided by the OSI file transfer, access and management protocol ISO 8571-4 in conjunction with the Association Control Service Elements ISO 8649 and with the Presentation service ISO 8822. ISO 8571-3 does not specify individual implementations or products, nor does it constrain the implementation of entities and interfaces within a computer system. There is, therefore, no conformance to this part of ISO 8571.

This Recommendation | International Standard defines ACSE services for ASO-association control in an open systems interconnection environment. ACSE supports two modes of communication service: connection-mode and connectionless-mode. The ACSE connection-mode service is provided by the use of the connection-mode ACSE protocol (see ITU-T Rec. X.227 bis | ISO/IEC 15954). The ACSE connectionless-mode service (A-UNIT-DATA) is provided by the use of the connectionless-mode ACSE protocol (see ITU-T Rec. X.237 bis | ISO/IEC 15955). Five functional units are defined in the ACSE. The mandatory Kernel functional unit is used to establish and release ASO-associations. The optional Authentication functional unit provides additional facilities for exchanging information in support of authentication during association establishment without adding services. The ACSE authentication facilities may be used to support a limited class of authentication methods. The optional ASO-context negotiation functional unit allows multiple ASO-contexts to be offered during association establishment. The optional higher level association functional unit provides for the facility to identify ASO-associations and transparently pass data to child ASOs and allows the ASO-context or the presentation context on an ASO-association to be modified during the lifetime of the association. This Recommendation | International Standard does not specify individual implementations or products, nor does it constrain the implementation of entities and interfaces within a computer system. No requirement is made for conformance to this Service definition.

This Recommendation i International Standard defines the Summarization Function. The Summarization Function is a Systems Management function which may be used by an application process in a centralised or decentralised management environment to interact for the purpose of systems management, as defined by the OSI Management Framework, CCITT Rec. X.700 I ISO/IEC 7498-4. This Recommendation I International Standard defines a function which consists of generic definitions and services. This function is positioned in the application layer of the OSI reference model (CCITT Rec. X.200 I ISO 7498) and is defined according to the model provided by ISO 9545. The role of systems management functions is described by CCITT Rec. X.701 I ISO/IEC 10040. The Summarization Function specifies methods to observe and report attribute values. It also specifies methods for reporting statistics based on attribute values, all observed at the same time. These attribute values and statistics provide summary information concerning a set of managed objects and their attributes at one or more distinct points in time. The statistics are calculated across managed objects, not over time. This Recommendation I International Standard — identifies the set of requirements satisfied by the function; — provides a model for the behaviour of the summarization objects; — specifies the management requirements of the function and how these are realised by specification of managed objects and their behaviour; — specifies the mapping of these services onto the CMIS services; and — specifies the abstract syntax of the parameters of the MAPDUs that will be used to refer to managed objects and their characteristics. This Recommendation I International Standard — does not define the nature of any implementation intended to provide the Summarization function; — does not specify the manner in which management is to be accomplished by the user of the Summarization function; — does not define the nature of any interactions which result in the use of the Summarization function; — does not specify the services necessary for the establishment, normal and abnormal release of a management association; — does not define the interactions which result by the simultaneous use of several management functions; — does not define connection establishment or authorisation requirements for the use of these functions or for any associated activity; and — does not preclude the definition of further metric object classes to provide measurements for inclusion in the function.

This Recommendation | International Standard is one of the set of Recommendations | International Standards for the OSI Management Information Service (MIS). It defines the Information Model of managed objects and their attributes that corresponds to the Information aspects of the systems management model introduced in the Systems Management Overview CCITT Rec. X.701 | ISO/IEC 10040, thus providing the modelling concepts necessary for the development of the other systems management Recommendations | International Standards. It also defines the principles of naming managed objects and attributes. This Recommendation | International Standard defines the logical structure of systems management information. In accordance with CCITT Rec. X.700 | ISO 7498-4 and X.701 | ISO/IEC 10040 management information is structured in terms of managed objects, their attributes, the management operations that can be performed upon them, and the notifications that they can emit. The set of managed objects in an open system, together with their attributes, constitutes that open system's management information base (MDB). This Recommendation | International Standard defines the concepts of managed objects in the Information Model, and prescribes the principles for naming the managed objects and their attributes so that they may be identified in and accessed by management protocols. This Recommendation | International Standard also describes the concept of managed object classes and the relationships into which managed objects and managed object classes can enter, including: inheritance, specialization, allomorphism and containment. This Recommendation | International Standard applies to all definitions of managed objects and their attributes for the purposes of systems management. NOTE — Although this Recommendation | International Standard applies to systems management, layer management, when defined, can also use this Recommendation | International Standard.

Abstract The models defined in ISO/IEC 9594-2:2008 provide a conceptual and terminological framework for the other parts of ISO/IEC 9594, which define various aspects of the Directory. The functional and administrative authority models define ways in which the Directory can be distributed, both functionally and administratively. Generic DSA and DSA information models and an Operational Framework are also provided to support Directory distribution. The generic Directory Information Models describe the logical structure of the DIB from the perspective of Directory and Administrative Users. In these models, the fact that the Directory is distributed, rather than centralized, is not visible. ISO/IEC 9594-2:2008 provides a specialization of the generic Directory Information Models to support Directory Schema administration. Other parts of ISO/IEC 9594 make use of the concepts defined in ISO/IEC 9594-2:2008 to define specializations of the generic information and DSA models to provide specific information, DSA and operational models supporting particular directory capabilities (e.g. Replication): 1.the service provided by the Directory is described (ISO/IEC 9594-3) in terms of the concepts of the information framework: this allows the service provided to be somewhat independent of the physical distribution of the DIB; 2.the distributed operation of the Directory is specified (ISO/IEC 9594-4) so as to provide that service, and therefore maintain that logical information structure, given that the DIB is in fact highly distributed; 3.replication capabilities offered by the component parts of the Directory to improve overall Directory performance are specified (ISO/IEC 9594-9). The security model establishes a framework for the specification of access control mechanisms. It provides a mechanism for identifying the access control scheme in effect in a particular portion of the DIT, and it defines three flexible, specific access control schemes which are suitable for a wide variety of applications and styles of use. The security model also provides a framework for protecting the confidentiality and integrity of directory operations using mechanisms such as encryption and digital signatures. This makes use of the framework for authentication defined in ISO/IEC 9594-8 as well as generic upper layers security tools defined in ISO/IEC 11586-1. DSA models establish a framework for the specification of the operation of the components of the Directory. Specifically: 1.the Directory functional model describes how the Directory is manifested as a set of one or more components, each being a DSA; 2.the Directory distribution model describes the principals according to which the DIB entries and entry-copies may be distributed among DSAs; 3.the DSA information model describes the structure of the Directory user and operational information held in a DSA; 4.the DSA operational framework describes the means by which the definition of specific forms of cooperation between DSAs to achieve particular objectives (e.g. shadowing) is structured.
