ISO/IEC 29121:2009 provides specifications of the data migration method for archival data storage which allow manufacturers storage systems that use DVD-R (ISO/IEC 23912:2005), DVD-RW (ISO/IEC 17342:2004), DVD-RAM (ISO/IEC 17592:2004), +R (ISO/IEC 17344:2006 and ISO/IEC 25434:2007), and +RW (ISO/IEC 17341:2006 and ISO/IEC 26925:2006) disks for information storage to classify disk longevity potential on the basis of initial performance requirements and to allow users to monitor continuing conformance with the error limits required for its class identified by the manufacturer of the drive/disk.

This International Standard specifies an accelerated aging test method for estimating the life expectancy for the retrievability of information stored on recordable or rewritable optical disks. This test includes details on the following formats: DVD-R/-RW/-RAM, +R/+RW. It may be applied to additional optical disk formats with the appropriate specification substitutions and may be updated by committee in the future as required. This International Standard includes the following: - stress conditions; - assumptions; - ambient conditions: - controlled storage condition, e.g. 25 °C and 50 % RH, using the Eyring model, - uncontrolled storage condition, e.g. 30 °C and 80 % RH, using the Arrhenius model; - evaluation system description; - specimen preparation; - data acquisition procedure; - data interpretation. The methodology includes only the effects of temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH). It does not attempt to model degradation due to complex failure mechanism kinetics, nor does it test for exposure to light, corrosive gases, contaminants, handling, and variations in playback subsystems. Disks exposed to these additional sources of stress or higher levels of T and RH are expected to experience shorter usable lifetimes.

It specifies the quality of the recorded and unrecorded signals, the format of the data and the recording method, thereby allowing for information interchange by means of such disks. The data can be written, read and overwritten many times using the phase change method. These disks are identified as +RW DL. This International Standard also specifies 80 mm disks with capacities of 2,66 Gbytes and 5,32 Gbytes. These disks have the same characteristics as the 120 mm disks, except for some parameters related to the smaller dimensions. All parameters unique for the 80 mm disks are specified in Annex A. This International Standard specifies - two related but different Types of this disk (see clause 7), - the conditions for conformance, - the environments in which the disk is to be tested, operated and stored, - the mechanical, physical and dimensional characteristics of the disk, so as to provide mechanical interchange between data processing systems, - the format of the information on the disk, including the physical disposition of the tracks and sectors, the error correcting codes and the coding method, - the characteristics of the signals recorded on the disk, thus enabling data processing systems to read the data from the disk. This International Standard provides for the interchange of disks between optical disk drives. Together with a standard for volume and file structure, it provides for full data interchange between data processing systems.
