This International Standard specifies the spectral characteristics of illuminants for sensitometry appropriate for evaluating camera films used for pictorial photography in natural daylight, studio tungsten and photoflood, including colour and black-and-white films, both reversal and negative types, and for evaluating black-and-white papers used with incandescent tungsten printers. It also describes methods for evaluating the acceptability of illuminants for sensitometry and specifies tolerances. It does not include illuminants for use with colour papers, since this would need to take account of the coloured mask of the negative material, for which no standard information is at present available.

This International Standard specifies methods for the measurement of opto-electronic conversion functions (OECFs) of electronic still-picture cameras whose output is encoded as a digital image file. The OECF is defined as the relationship between the focal plane log exposures or scene log luminances, and the digital output levels of an opto-electronic digital image capture system. This International Standard applies to both monochrome and colour electronic still-picture cameras.

This part of ISO 11315 specifies the measurement of screen luminance level, as seen by a (seated) viewer for all types of purely optical still projection in darkened projection rooms. Since the optical characteristics of the surface of this screen have a direct bearing on luminance, the screen shall be considered an integral part of the projection system for this part of ISO 11315. A standardized light-measuring system allows comparison of screen luminance values for different projection systems used alternately in practical use.
