This International Standard provides recommendations concerning the storage conditions, storage facilities, handling and inspection for all processed safety photographic films (hereafter referred to as photographic film) in roll, strip, aperture-card or sheet format, regardless of size. This International Standard is applicable to extended-term and medium-term storage of photographic film as defined in clause 3. It is applicable to photographic film records intended as storage copies, which should not be in frequent use. It does not apply to "work" or "use" copies (see annex B). This International Standard, while intended for materials that are properly processed, should also be of considerable value in prolonging the useful life of photographic film whose processing conditions are unknown, or that have been toned, retouched, or have markings with materials of uncertain or unknown stability. This International Standard is applicable only to safety photographic film (see ISO 18906). Nitrate-base films are hazardous (see [8] in the bibliography) and are not covered by this International Standard. They require special storage considerations (see [4] in the bibliography), but the environmental conditions specified in this International Standard are applicable. The storage of photographic prints and photographic plates requires different considerations. They are not covered in this International Standard, but are described respectively in ISO 18920 and ISO 18918.

This International Standard provides specifications and test procedures for establishing the safety of photographic films with respect to hazards from fire. The specifications are applicable to both unprocessed and processed films on any type of currently known plastic support. These specifications cover silver films (both gelatin and non-gelatin types), colour films, diazo films, vesicular films, and striped or full-width magnetic films. Magnetic tapes and video recording tapes are excluded. A field test for burning behaviour is described in informative annex B, and methods of marking film are defined in informative annex C. A simple test to distinguish non-safety nitrate-base film from cellulose ester and polyester-base film is given in informative annex D. note: 1) Normally, unprocessed and processed films have the same safety characteristics, so either one may be tested for conformance to these specifications. If an additional treatment, such as a lacquer coating, has been applied after processing, the safety characteristics may or may not be affected. In case of doubt, both unprocessed and processed films must be tested.

1 This International Standard describes methods for evaluating the effectiveness of chemical conversion treatments intended to increase the resistance of wet-processed silver images to oxidation. The treatment may be applied as part of the original processing, or it may be a post-processing treatment. This International Standard does not recommend general or specific treatments for silver images. Likewise, treatment temperature, times and replenishment rates are outside the scope of this International Standard. Factors to be considered in a stabilizing treatment are discussed in informative annex B. Two test methods are described: the "dichromate bleach test" and the "hydrogen peroxide incubation test" (see [7] in the bibliography). The significance of each is discussed in informative annex C. 2 This International Standard is applicable to silver-gelatin images coated on supports of either plastic, paper or glass.

This International Standard specifies a test method for the prediction of certain physical or chemical property changes of imaging materials. This International Standard is applicable to the Arrhenius test portion of ISO 8225, ISO 9718, IS0 10602, ISO 10977 and ISO 18919. This International Standard is applicable to the prediction of the optical-density (D) loss or gain of imaging materials. Photographic dye images may be produced by chromogenic processing, by formation of diazo dyes, or by non-chromogenic methods such as dye diffusion and silver dye-bleaching processing. This standard also covers density changes caused by — residual coupler changes in dye images, — excess residual processing chemicals in silver black-and-white materials, — temperature effects on thermally processed silver images. This International Standard is applicable to the prediction of support degradation. One such example is the generation of acetic acid by degradation of cellulose acetate film support. Another example is the change in tensile energy absorption of black-and-white paper support.

This International Standard specifies a method of determining the presence of a lubricant on photographic film. It is intended that the test should be applied to film after processing, but the test may be used in other situations. It is applicable to both the emulsion and support sides of the film. The results of the test are calculated in terms of a coefficient of friction, but the test does not purport to characterize the frictional characteristics of the film material.

This International Standard specifies the following: — dimensions of film lengths; — latent-image frame numbering; — latent-image digital bar-codes to identify the film DX number; — dimensions of daylight-loading film magazines for use with 135-size cameras; — a magazine bar-code that identifies the film's DX number as well as the number of exposures; — camera auto-sensing areas, which provide an electrically readable encodement of film speed, number of exposures, and recommended exposure latitude for use with appropriately designed cameras; — an information panel on which the film identification, speed and number of exposures are visible through a window in the back of appropriately designed cameras; — film pull-out force specification; — film-spool attachment strength specification. This International Standard is not intended to apply to "bulk" 35-mm film used for reloading into 135-size magazines, nor to the reloadable magazines themselves. Also, this standard does not apply to 135-size film and magazines that are used in single-use camera applications.

This International Standard specifies a method for determining and quantitatively expressing the folding endurance of photographic film. The method is based on the MIT folding-endurance tester described in annex B. It is an analytical test and is not intended to simulate practical use conditions. This International Standard is applicable to film with or without a gelatin backing. It may also be applied to either raw or processed film, although the flexibility level of a given film can be quite different after processing. Equipment similar to that described in this International Standard may be used provided that a correlation has been established between the results obtained using such equipment and the results obtained using the equipment described.

This International Standard specifies methods for determining and quantitatively expressing the curl characteristics of unprocessed and processed photographic film and paper in sheet, roll or strip formats. It specifies three measuring methods: method A involves the determination of curl when the specimen is held in a vertical position, methods B and C with the specimen in a horizontal position. The values for the three methods are not comparable because of the differences in specimen configuration and size. These methods are not intended for use in determining the curl characteristics of photographic materials during processing or drying.
