The purpose of this technique is to provide a means of determining the severity of particulate contamination in fluid power systems. AS598 was prepared by SAE A6C1 panel and supersedes ARP598C. AS598 retained the technical content of ARP598C with more prescriptive requirements for the material used to carry out the analysis. The widely used technique has since been replaced in many instances with automatic particle counters (APC) but remains a proven, accurate and reliable technique. This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) defines the materials, apparatus and procedure for sizing and counting of particulate contamination, 5 um or greater, in hydraulic fluid samples by membrane filtration with microscopic counting. The microscopic counting method is capable of counting particulate matter in samples withdrawn from fluid power systems as identified by the 12 classes of AS4059 and projected beyond these for the five standard ranges specified and can thus serve as the primary document to determine acceptability. It is also capable of revealing but not measuring evidence of abnormal amount of water, other fluids, fine particulate and other materials, especially fibers and metals. It is applicable to all military, civil, space vehicles and test equipment.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) addresses the design, installation and testing of coiled tube assemblies ranging from 1/4 inch (6.3 mm) to 1.0 inch (25 mm) diameter using CRES tubing per AMS-T-6845, unless otherwise approved by Procuring Activity. This ARP specifically details three different configurations of coiled tubing. These configurations should be compatible with pressure levels up to 3000 psi (20.7 MPa) upon the completion of the analysis for the actual stress and life requirement of the intended application. However, formal qualification tests are recommended to verify the satisfactory installation, clamping, and the life of each unique design.

The purpose of this test procedure is to present test methods that can be utilized to evaluate the filtration and operating characteristics of filters that will be utilized in a cryogenic system. The methods presented herein are intended to supplement standard filter testing specifications to allow evaluation of filter performance characteristics in areas that could be affected by extreme low temperatures. The test methods can be utilized to evaluate filters up to and including 60 gpm (230 L/min) capacity. If higher flow rate filters are to be evaluated in accordance with the test methods presented herein, it will be necessary to increase the system flow capacity and the size of effluent sampling system from those recommended in this document. The test methods presented herein do not encompass testing of cryogenic bypass relief valves, differential pressure indicators, gages, or components other than a basic filter housing and element.
