1 Scope This document specifies a method for the quantification of four tobacco specific nitrosamines ( TSNAs ) in tobacco and the following tobacco products: cigarettes, cigars and smokeless tobacco products using reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The TSNAs determined with this method are: N-nitrosonornicotine (NNN), N-nitrosoanatabine (NAT), N-nitrosoanabasine (NAB) and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK).

This document gives a list of constituents of interest proposed for measurement in the aerosol for the purpose of regulatory submission under the Directive 2014/40/EU (TPD) [2], for - prefilled products such as disposable e-cigarettes and refill cartridges, - e-liquids sold in refill containers, - the following categories of hardware: coils or other heater elements of the vaping product, atomisers, rebuildable atomisers and all open tank or dripper products with inbuilt atomisers, including clearomisers. This list is not intended to be comprehensive but rather, it represents the default minimum requirement. Depending on the device/liquid combination and the toxicological assessment other substances might have to be measured as well.

This document specifies a method for the determination of ammonia in tobacco and tobacco products using ion chromatographic analysis. It is applicable to tobacco, processed tobaccos, smokeless tobacco products and cigarette filler. The ammonia calibration range specified in the method is from 0,100 μg/ml to 10,0 μg/ml. This range correlates to 10 µg/g to 1000 µg/g ammonia in tobacco. Samples with higher levels of ammonia can be diluted prior to analysis to bring the samples within the calibration range.
