1.1 This test method covers the determination of paraffins, naphthenes, and aromatics by carbon number in low olefinic hydrocarbon streams having final boiling points of 200 °C or less. Hydrocarbons with boiling points greater than 200 °C and less than 270 °C are reported as a single group. Olefins, if present, are hydrogenated and the resultant saturates are included in the paraffin and naphthene distribution. Aromatics boiling at C9 and above are reported as a single aromatic group. 1.2 This test method is not intended to determine individual components except for benzene and toluene that are the only C6 and C7 aromatics, respectively, and cyclopentane that is the only C5 naphthene. The lower limit of detection for a single hydrocarbon component or group is 0.05 % by mass. 1.3 This test method is applicable to hydrocarbon mixtures including virgin, catalytically converted, thermally converted, alkylated and blended naphtha. 1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.4.1 The abbreviation for SI unit “coulomb” is “C”. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Specific precautionary statements are given in Section 8 and Table 1. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

1.1 This test method covers the atmospheric distillation of petroleum products and liquid fuels using a laboratory batch distillation unit to determine quantitatively the boiling range characteristics of such products as light and middle distillates, automotive spark-ignition engine fuels with or without oxygenates (see Note 1), aviation gasolines, aviation turbine fuels, diesel fuels, biodiesel blends up to 30 % volume, marine fuels, special petroleum spirits, naphthas, white spirits, kerosines, and Grades 1 and 2 burner fuels. NOTE 1—An interlaboratory study was conducted in 2008 involving 11 different laboratories submitting 15 data sets and 15 different samples of ethanol-fuel blends containing 25 % volume, 50 % volume, and 75 % volume ethanol. The results indicate that the repeatability limits of these samples are comparable or within the published repeatability of the method (with the exception of FBP of 75 % ethanol-fuel blends). On this basis, it can be concluded that Test Method D86 is applicable to ethanol-fuel blends such as Ed75 and Ed85 (Specification D5798) or other ethanol-fuel blends with greater than 10 % volume ethanol. See ASTM RR:D02-1694 for supporting data.2 1.2 The test method is designed for the analysis of distillate fuels; it is not applicable to products containing appreciable quantities of residual material. 1.3 This test method covers both manual and automated instruments. 1.4 Unless otherwise noted, the values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are provided for information only. 1.5 WARNING—Mercury has been designated by many regulatory agencies as a hazardous substance that can cause serious medical issues. Mercury, or its vapor, has been demonstrated to be hazardous to health and corrosive to materials. Use Caution when handling mercury and mercury-containing products. See the applicable product Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for additional information. The potential exists that selling mercury or mercury-containing products, or both, is prohibited by local or national law. Users must determine legality of sales in their location. 1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.7 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

1.1 This test method covers the use of manual vapor pressure instruments to determine the vapor pressure of crude oils exerted in a vacuum. This test method is suitable for testing samples that exert a vapor pressure between 25 kPa and 180 kPa at 37.8 °C at vapor/liquid ratios from 4:1 to 0.25:1 (X = 4 to 0.25, see 3.2.4). NOTE 1—This test method is suitable for the determination of the vapor pressure of crude oils at temperatures from 0 °C to 60 °C and pressures up to 500 kPa, but the precision and bias statements (see Section 15) may not be applicable. 1.2 This test method is meant primarily for use under field conditions for immediate evaluation of vapor pressure for storage, transport, or operational uses. 1.3 This test method is not intended for use in custody transfer applications. Test Method D6377 shall be used for custody transfer applications. 1.4 This test method provides a reasonable confirmation for the presence of light ends in the source material given that the partial pressure of low boiling components contribute significantly to total vapor pressure. 1.5 This test method allows both sample collection and subsequent vapor pressure measurement of crude oil samples directly from the sample source. The collected sample may also be transferred to an automated vapor pressure instrument such as used for Test Method D6377. The field test apparatus is suitable for transportation provided suitable over-pack is used to meet the regulations for the transportation of dangerous goods in the transportation jurisdiction(s). 1.6 This test method allows the determination of vapor pressure for crude oil samples having pour points below 0 °C and flow at the sampling conditions to allow inlet to the apparatus. 1.7 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. 1.7.1 Exception—Other units of measurement are included in this standard for ease of use in multiple jurisdictions. 1.8 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.9 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

1.1 This test method covers the determination by means of a glass hydrometer in conjunction with a series of calculations of the API gravity of crude petroleum and petroleum products normally handled as liquids and having a Reid vapor pressure (Test Method D323) of 14.696 psi (101.325 kPa) or less. Values are determined at existing temperatures and corrected to values at 60 °F (15.56 °C), or converted to values at 60 °F, by means of Adjunct to D1250 Standard Guide for the Use of the Joint API and ASTM Adjunct for Temperature and Pressure Volume Correction Factors for Generalized Crude Oils, Refined Products, and Lubricating Oils (API MPMS Chapter 11.1). These tables are not applicable to nonhydrocarbons or essentially pure hydrocarbons such as the aromatics. 1.2 The initial values obtained are uncorrected hydrometer readings and not density measurements. Values are measured on a hydrometer at either the reference temperature or at another convenient temperature, and readings are corrected for the meniscus effect, the thermal glass expansion effect, alternate calibration temperature effects and to the reference temperature by means of the petroleum measurement tables; values obtained at other than the reference temperature being hydrometer readings and not density measurements. 1.3 The initial hydrometer readings determined shall be recorded before performing any calculations. Then the calculations required in Section 9 shall be performed and documented before using the final result in a subsequent calculation procedure (measurement ticket calculation, meter factor calculation, or base prover volume determination). 1.4 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific warning statement, see 8.5. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

This document describes three procedures (A, B and C) covering determinations of flash no-flash and flash point. Rapid equilibrium procedures A and B are applicable to flash no-flash and flash point tests of paints, including water-borne paints, varnishes, binders for paints and varnishes, adhesives, solvents, petroleum products including aviation turbine, diesel and kerosene fuels, fatty acid methyl esters and related products over the temperature range –30 °C to 300 °C. The rapid equilibrium procedures are used to determine whether a product will or will not flash at a specified temperature (flash no-flash procedure A) or the flash point of a sample (procedure B). When used in conjunction with the flash detector (A.1.6), this document is also suitable to determine the flash point of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). The validity of the precision is given in Table 2. Non-equilibrium procedure C is applicable to petroleum products including aviation turbine, diesel and kerosine fuels, and related petroleum products, over the temperature range –20 °C to 300 °C. The non-equilibrium procedure is automated to determine the flash point. Precision has been determined over the range 40 °C to 135 °C. For specifications and regulations, procedures A or B are routinely used (see 10.1.1).

1.1 This guide covers techniques for evaluating the statistical capability and fitness for use of standard test methods used for measuring properties of petroleum products, liquid fuels, and lubricants. Specifically, this guide provides strategies for evaluating the capability of a test method to provide a sufficiently precise estimate of the intended parameter versus a given level or value of that parameter and for assessing, with sufficient confidence, the fitness for use of a test method for determining the acceptability of products versus specification, regulatory, or manufacturing limits. 1.2 The assessment of capability in this guide is applicable to test methods that always yield non-negative numerical results and have a hard, fixed zero lower limit or fixed upper limit (for example, 100 %). Detailed knowledge of a test method and professional judgement may be required in determining the applicability of this guide to certain test methods. 1.3 In accordance with this guide, the assessment of fitness for use of a test method versus specification, regulatory, or manufacturing limits is generally applicable to test methods that provide numerical results and have applicable reproducibility precision values. 1.4 This guide is intended for use by test method developers, specification setters, and laboratories selecting test methods to evaluate products for specific purposes or versus specific limits. 1.5 This guide is not applicable to test methods that measure temperature to determine properties such as, but not limited to, freeze point, pour point, flash point, and distillations. This guide is not intended for use by laboratories for evaluating laboratory test method execution capability, nor is it intended to evaluate manufacturing process capability. 1.6 The expressions of capability and fitness for use derived from use of this guide should not be the only criteria for selection and use of a given test method. Other factors such as the laboratory’s experience with the test method, length of time to complete an analysis, typical product results relative to the regulatory or manufacturing specification limit, closeness of the results to zero, and cost factors may contribute more significantly to the decision to use a given test method for a specific application. 1.7 This guide draws on statistical approaches covered in other standards supporting petroleum products, liquid fuels, and lubricants, including Practices D3244, D6259, D6299, D6300, D6792 and ISO 4259. 1.8 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use.
