Pentane insolubles can include oil-insoluble materials and some oil-insoluble resinous matter originating from oil or additive degradation, or both. Toluene insoluble materials can come from (1) external contamination, (2) fuel carbon and highly carbonized materials from degradation of fuel, oil, and additives, or (3) engine wear and corrosion materials. A significant change in pentane insolubles, toluene insolubles (with or without coagulant), and insoluble resins indicates a change in oil which could lead to lubrication system problems. Insolubles measured can also assist in evaluating the performance characteristics of a used oil or in determining the cause of equipment failure.1.1 This test method covers the determination of pentane and toluene insolubles in used lubricating oils.1.2 Procedure A covers the determination of insolubles without the use of coagulant in the pentane. It provides an indication of the materials that can readily be separated from the oil-solvent mixtures by centrifuging.1.3 Procedure B covers the determination of insolubles in oils containing detergents and employs a coagulant for both the pentane and toluene insolubles. In addition to the materials separated by using Procedure A, this coagulation procedure separates some finely divided materials that may be suspended in the oil.Note 1Results obtained by Procedures A and B should not be compared since they usually give different values. The same procedure should be employed when comparing values obtained periodically on an oil in use or when comparing results determined by two or more laboratories.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. This test method is a safe and fast alternative for determination of the Noack evaporation loss of a lubricant. The evaporation loss of a lubricant is important in the hot zones of equipment where evaporation of part of the lubricant may increase lubricant consumption. Some lubricant specifications cite a maximum allowable evaporative loss.1.1 This test method covers the procedure for determining the Noack evaporation loss of lubricating oils using a thermogravimetric analyzer test (TGA). The test method is applicable to base stocks and fully formulated lubricant oils having a Noack evaporative loss ranging from 0 to 30 mass %. This procedure requires much smaller specimens, and is faster when multiple samples are sequentially analyzed, and safer than the standard Noack method using Wood's metal.1.2 The evaporative loss determined by this test method is the same as that determined using the standard Noack test methods.1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. This test measures the trace level amount of sediment that is naphtha-insoluble and can be separated by centrifuging. Excessive amounts of sediment in oil could lead to system malfunction in critical applications.1.1 This test method covers the determination of trace amounts (less than 0.05 volume %) of sediment in lubricating oils. Since oil-soluble material precipitated by the specified solvent is not intended as part of the measured sediment, the test method is not applicable in cases where precipitated oil-soluble components will appreciably contribute to the sediment readings.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. This guide is intended to aid the equipment manufacturer, installer, and turbine operator in coordinating their efforts to obtain and maintain clean lubrication and control systems. The flushing and cleaning philosophies stated in this guide are applicable to both large and small lubrication systems. Clean lubrication systems result from proper system design and good planning, execution, and communication by all involved during commissioning. No phase of these procedures should be undertaken without a thorough understanding of the possible effects of improper system preparation. The installation, cleaning, and flushing of the equipment should not be entrusted to persons lacking in experience. Because of the knowledge and specialized equipment that is required, the operator may wish to employ an outside specialist contractor for the system flushing. Review of this guide can provide guidelines for discussion with prospective contractors.1.1 This guide covers types of contaminants, oil purification devices, contamination monitoring, contamination control during building or refurbishing of turbine systems, lubrication system flushing, and maintenance of pure lubrication oil.1.2 To obtain maximum operating life and reliability, or lubricants and system, it is vital that the turbine lubrication system has pure oil. This guide is intended to aid the equipment manufacturer, installer, and turbine operator in coordinating their efforts to obtain and maintain clean lubrication and control systems. These systems may be on land or marine turbine generators and propulsion and mechanical drive equipment. This guide is generalized due to variations in the type of equipment, builder''s practices, and operating conditions.1.3 This guide primarily addresses petroleum based lubricating oil. For systems using nonpetroleum based fluids, this guide may not be appropriate. For nonpetroleum products, consult the equipment and fluid manufacturers.1.4 This guide is applicable to both large and small lubrication systems. Some equipment specified herein, however, may not be appropriate for all systems. Moreover, in situations where specific guidelines and procedures are provided by the equipment manufacturer, such procedures should take precedence over the recommendations of this guide. This standard does not purport to address the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

The concentration of nitrogen is a measure of the presence of nitrogen-containing additives. Knowledge of its concentration can be used to predict performance.1.1 This test method covers the determination of nitrogen in lubricating oils when present in the concentration from 0.03 to 0.10 mass %, and for the determination of nitrogen in fuel oils when present in the concentration from 0.015 to 2.0 mass %. This test method is also applicable to the analysis of additive concentrates and additive packages.Note 18212;This test method may not be applicable to certain materials containing N-O or N-N linkage. However, the samples used in the cooperative program to establish the precision of the test method were compounded with currently available ashless additives containing nitrogen. Complete recovery of the nitrogen present in these additives was obtained.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. 1.1 This specification covers engine oils for light-duty and heavy-duty internal combustion engines used under a variety of operating conditions in automobiles, trucks, vans, buses, and off-highway farm, industrial, and construction equipment.1.2 This specification is not intended to cover engine oil applications such as outboard motors, snowmobiles, lawn mowers, motorcycles, railroad locomotives, or ocean-going vessels.1.3 This specification is based on engine test results that generally have been correlated with results obtained on reference oils in actual service engines operating with gasoline or diesel fuel. As it pertains to the API SL engine oil category, it is based on engine test results that generally have been correlated with results obtained on reference oils run in gasoline engine Sequence Tests that defined engine oil categories prior to 2000. It should be recognized that not all aspects of engine oil performance are evaluated by the engine tests in this specification. In addition, when assessing oil performance, it is desirable that the oil be evaluated under actual operating conditions.1.4 This specification includes bench tests that help evaluate some aspects of engine oil performance not covered by the engine tests in this specification.1.5 The values stated in either SI units or other units shall be regarded separately as standard. 1.1 This test method covers the thermal stability of fluids for use in heavy duty manual transmissions when operated at high temperatures.1.2 The lubricant performance is measured by the number of shifting cycles that can be performed without failure of synchronization when the transmission is operated while continuously cycling between high and low range.1.3 Correlation of test results with truck transmission service has not been established. However, the procedure has been shown to appropriately separate two transmission lubricants, which have shown satisfactory and unsatisfactory field performance in the trucks of one manufacturer.1.4 Changes in this test method may be necessary due to refinements in the procedure, obsolescence of parts, or reagents, and so forth. These changes will be incorporated by Information Letters issued by the ASTM Test Monitoring Center (TMC). The test method will be revised to show the content of all the letters, as issued.1.5 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. This test method can be used to determine anti-wear properties and coefficient of friction of EP lubricating oils at selected temperatures and loads specified for use in applications in which high-speed vibrational or start-stop motions are present for extended periods of time under initial high Hertzian point contact pressures. It has found application as a screening test for lubricants used in gear or cam/follower systems. Users of this test method should determine whether results correlate with field performance or other applications.1.1 This test method covers an extreme pressure (EP) lubricating oil's coefficient of friction and its ability to protect against wear when subjected to high-frequency, linear oscillation motion. The procedure is identical to that described in DIN 51834.1.2 This test method can also be used to determine the ability of a non-EP lubricating oil to protect against wear and its coefficient of friction under similar test conditions.1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard.
