Il metodo considerato riguarda l' esame al microscopio ottico dei materiali metallici mediante la tecnica della replica effettuata con vernici o con film. Esso si applica di regola, quando non e' possibile prelevare dal prodotto in esame un saggio da cui ricavare una provetta per l' esame microscopico. In queste condizioni il metodo puo' essere considerato esame microscopico non distruttivo eseguito sul saggio costituito dal prodotto. Il metodo consiste nel realizzare sulla superficie in esame un' impronta riproducente in dettaglio i microrilievi dovuti all' attacco micrografico. Nella presente norma vengono presi in considerazione tre sistemi che rispondono ugualmente bene allo scopo nelle varie condizioni di impiego. Si puo' ricoprire la superficie da esaminare mediante vernici che danno una pellicola sottile, trasparente, priva di tensioni, facilmente essiccabile; si puo' ricorrere a piastrine metalliche aventi su una superficie uno strato di vernice gia' applicato (film superficiale); si puo' fare aderire alla superficie, preventivamente inumidita con un solvente, un film plastico (senza sopporto) in fogli. Nel metodo si distinguono le fasi seguenti: lucidatura e attacco della superficie da esaminare; applicazione della replica; essiccamento della replica; scollamento della replica; fissaggio della replica sul vetrino (quando necessita); esame della replica.
