1.1 This guide covers dynamic testing of vulcanized rubber and rubber-like (both hereinafter termed "rubber" or "elastomeric") materials and products, leading from the definitions of terms used, through the basic mathematics and symbols, to the measurement of stiffness and damping, and finally through the use of specimen geometry and flexing method, to the measurement of dynamic modulus.1.2 This guide describes a variety of vibratory methods for determining dynamic properties, presenting them as options, not as requirements. The methods involve free resonant vibration, and forced resonant and nonresonant vibration. In the latter two cases the input is assumed to be sinusoidal.1.3 While the methods are primarily for the measurement of modulus, a material property, they may in many cases be applied to measurements of the properties of full-scale products.1.4 The methods described are primarily useful over the range of temperatures from -70oC to +200oC (-100oF to +400oF) and for frequencies from 0.01 to 100 Hz. Not all instruments and methods will accommodate the entire ranges.1.5 When employed for the measurement of dynamic modulus, the methods are intended for materials having complex moduli in the range from 100 to 100 000 kPa (15 to 15 000 psi) and damping angles from 0 to 90 degrees. Not all instruments and methods will accommodate the entire ranges.1.6 Both translational and rotational methods are described. To simplify generic descriptions, the terminology of translation is used. The subject matter applies equally to the rotational mode, substituting "torque" and "angular deflection" for "force" and "displacement."1.7 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. 1.1 This test method covers the determination of the extrudability of unvulcanized SBR and NBR rubber compounds through a screw-type extruder equipped with ASTM Extrusion Die, Garvey type. This test method is designed to allow the observation of the appearance and contours of the extrusion. Rating systems are provided along with recipes for compounds of known extrusion characteristics. The utility of the test method for evaluating rubbers or compounding materials other than those listed has not been established. Since extrusion machines differ among laboratories, the procedure includes techniques that minimize differences between machines.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. One objective in the extrusion of rubber compounds is to obtain a smooth extrusion that closely reproduces the contours of the extrusion die. This test method provides for a subjective determination of this under controlled conditions. As the rating is subjective, it does not lend itself readily to incorporation as a specification requirement. It does not measure other aspects of extrudability such as rate of extrusion or die swell in a quantitative manner.1.1 This test method covers the determination of the extrudability of unvulcanized SBR and NBR rubber compounds through a screw-type extruder equipped with ASTM Extrusion Die, Garvey type. 1.1 This test method for determination of styrene content is intended for general use on solid uncompounded styrene-butadiene copolymers, commonly referred to as SBR, prepared by the emulsion process. SBR polymers prepared in solution will require the use of different refractive index tables because the vinyl content of the butadiene differs from that in the emulsion polymers. It is applicable to polymers having less than 55% bound styrene. Note 1--The nomenclature used in this test method is in accordance with Practice D1418. 1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. 1.1 This test method covers the determination of crack growth of vulcanized rubber when subjected to repeated bending strain or flexing. It is particularly applicable to tests of synthetic rubber compounds which resist the initiation of cracking due to flexing when tested by Method B of Test Methods D430. Cracking initiated in these materials by small cuts or tears in service, may rapidly increase in size and progress to complete failure even though the material is extremely resistant to the original flexing-fatigue cracking. Because of this characteristic of synthetic compounds, particularly those of the SBR type, this test method in which the specimens are first artificially punctured in the flex area should be used in evaluating the fatigue-cracking properties of this class of material. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard.
