The abbreviated terms used are to provide generic identification of the polymer(s). This practice is especially pertinent for use with durable plastic components of products. This practice is not intended to supplant, replace, or in any way interfere with the requirements found in legislation for marking or labeling of packaging. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. This test method outlines the use of dynamic mechanical instrumentation for determining and reporting the viscoelastic properties of thermoplastic and thermosetting resins and composite systems in the form of rectangular bars molded directly or cut from sheets, plates, or molded shapes. The elastic modulus data generated may be used to identify the thermomechanical properties of a plastics material or composition. This test method is intended to provide a means for determining the viscoelastic properties of a wide variety of plastics using nonresonant, forced-vibration techniques as outlined in Practice D 4065. In particular, this method identifies the procedures used to measure properties using what is known as a dual-cantilever beam flexure arrangement. Plots of the elastic (storage) modulus, loss (viscous) modulus, and complex modulus, and tan delta as a function of frequency, time, or temperature are indicative of significant transitions in the thermomechanical performance of the polymeric material systems. This test method is valid for a wide range of frequencies, typically from 0.01 to 100 Hz. Apparent discrepancies may arise in results obtained under differing experimental conditions. These apparent differences from results observed in another study can usually be reconciled, without changing the observed data, by reporting in full (as described in this test method) the conditions under which the data were obtained. Test data obtained by this test method are relevant and appropriate for use in engineering design. The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. 1.1 These requirements cover parts made of polymeric materials that are used in electrical equipment and describe the various test procedures and their use in the testing of such parts and equipment. 1.2 These requirements do not cover the specific insulating systems that are covered by the requirements contained in the Standard for Systems of Insulating Materials, General, UL 1446. 1.3 Test procedures are provided herein for the evaluation of polymeric materials in specific applications. These test procedures include references to data obtained from small-scale property tests conducted under standard conditions as well as other practical means of evaluation. This new edition also includes revisions for the Clarification of End-Product Flammability Tests and some other general editorial revisions as proposed in the August 8, 2003 bulletin.

This specification covers polyolefin-based plastic lumber products for use as exterior residential decking boards. Plastic lumber products are currently made predominantly with recycled polyolefin plastics (in particular high-density polyethylene) where the products are more or less non-homogenous in the cross-section. However, this specification is also potentially applicable to similar manufactured plastic products made from other plastic and plastic composite materials that have non-homogenous cross-sections. This specification details a procedure to calculate recommended span lengths for spacing of support joists. This procedure was developed using experimental data from a typical unreinforced plastic lumber made predominantly from recycled high-density polyethylene. The methodology to develop span lengths for other types and compositions of plastic lumber is detailed in Appendix X1 of this standard. The values are stated in inch-pound units, as these are currently the most common units used by the construction industry. Equivalent SI units are indicated in parentheses. However, the units stated for irradiance exposure in the weatherability section (6.3) are in SI units as these are the units commonly used for testing of this type.
