1.1 This practice covers the installation of suspended systems for acoustical tile and lay-in panels and their additional requirements for two groups of buildings that are constructed to resist the effects of earthquake motions as defined by ASCE 7 and the International Building Code. These groupings are for Seismic Design Category C and Seismic Design Categories D, E and F. 1.2 The authority having jurisdiction shall determine the applicability of this practice. 1.3 Specification C635 and Practice C636 cover suspension systems and their installation without special regard to seismic lateral restraint needs. They remain applicable and shall be followed when this practice is specified. 1.4 Ceilings less than or equal to 144 square feet and surrounded by walls connected to the structure above are exempt from the requirements of this practice. 1.5 This practice is not intended to stifle research and development of new products or methods. This practice is not intended to prevent the installation of any material or prohibit any design or method of construction not prescribed in this practice, provided that any such alternative has been substantiated by verifiable engineering data or full-scale dynamic testing that is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction. 1.6 Ceiling areas of 1000 ft2 [92.9 m2 ] or less shall be exempt from the lateral force bracing requirements of 5.2.8. 1.7 Ceilings constructed of gypsum board which is screw or nail attached to suspended members that support a ceiling on one level extending from wall to wall shall be exempt from the requirements of this practice. 1.8 Free floating ceilings (those not attached directly to any structural walls) supported by chains or cables from the structure are not required to satisfy the seismic force requirements provided they meet the following requirements: 1.8.1 The design load for such items shall equal 1.4 times the vertical operating weight. 1.8.2 Seismic interaction effects shall be considered in accordance with 5.7. 1.8.3 The connection to the structure shall allow a 360° range of motion in the horizontal plane. 1.9 The values stated in either inch-pound or SI units are to be regarded as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems result in nonconformance with the specification. 1.10 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This European Standard deals with the requirements and the basic performance criteria and specifies minimum values where appropriate for precast hollow core slabs made of prestressed or reinforced normal weight concrete according to EN 1992-1-1:2004. This European Standard covers terminology, performance criteria, tolerances, relevant physical properties, special test methods, and special aspects of transport and erection. Hollow core elements are used in floors, roofs, walls and similar applications. In this European Standard the material properties and other requirements for floors and roofs are dealt with; for special use in walls and other applications, see the relevant product standards for possible additional requirements. The elements have lateral edges with a grooved profile in order to make a shear key to transfer shear through joints contiguous elements. For diaphragm action the joints have to function as horizontal shear joints. To improve this action vertical grooves may be provided. The elements are manufactured in factories by extrusion, slipforming or mouldcasting. Fitting slabs (narrowed slab elements) and recesses to the hollow core slabs can be made during production or afterwards. Hollow core slabs can have provisions for thermal activation, heating, cooling, sound insulation, etc. Due to these provisions, the concrete temperature remains in it’s natural range. This European Standard also deals with solid slab elements used in conjunction with hollow core slabs and manufactured by extrusion, slipforming or mouldcasting, equivalent to the manufacturing of hollow core slabs. These solid slabs have the same overall cross-section as hollow core slabs, however without hollow cores. The application of the standard is limited for prestressed elements to a maximum depth of 500 mm and for reinforced elements to a maximum depth of 300 mm. For both types, the maximum width without transverse reinforcement is limited to 1 200 mm and with transverse reinforcement to 2 400 mm. The elements may be used in composite action with an in situ structural topping cast on site. The applications considered are floors and roofs of buildings, including areas for vehicles in the category F and G of EN 1991-1-1 which are not subjected to fatigue loading. For building in seismic zones additional provisions are given in EN 1998-1. This European Standard does not deal with complementary matters. E.g. the slabs should not be used in roofs without additional protection against water penetration.

This practice is a prescriptive set of installation methods to be used for suspended ceilings and is often used in lieu of designing a separate lateral restraint system. The authority having jurisdiction shall determine the applicability of this practice to local code requirements. This practice covers installation of suspended ceiling systems and related components in areas that require resistance to the effects of earthquake motions as defined by ASCE 7 and the International Building Code. The practice is broken into two main sections. The first section covers areas with light to moderate earthquake potential (Seismic Design Category C) while the second deals with severe earthquake potential (Seismic Design Category D, E & F). This practice includes requirements from multiple sources including previous versions of this practice, CISCA Seismic Recommendations for Direct-hung Acoustical Tile and Lay-in Ceilings, Seismic Zones 0-2 and CISCA Guidelines for Seismic Restraint for Direct Hung Suspended Ceiling Assemblies, Seismic Zones 3 & 4, suspended ceiling requirements from the International Building Code and ASCE 7. The purpose is to combine the requirements from these sources into a single comprehensive document.1.1 This practice covers the installation of suspended systems for acoustical tile and lay-in panels and their additional requirements for two groups of buildings that are constructed to resist the effects of earthquake motions as defined by ASCE 7 and the International Building Code. 1.6 Ceiling areas of 1000 ft2 [92.9 m2] or less shall be exempt from the lateral force bracing requirements of 5.2.8. 1.7 Ceilings constructed of gypsum board which is screw or nail attached to suspended members that support a ceiling on one level extending from wall to wall shall be exempt from the requirements of this practice. 1.9 The values stated in either inch-pound or SI units are to be regard......

1.1 This test method describes procedures to be followed in testing the performance of the anchorage of all types of new and existing permanent metal railing systems (guard, stair, and ramp-rail systems), and rails (hand, grab, and transfer rails) installed in and for agricultural, assembly, commercial, educational, industrial, institutional, recreational, and residential buildings. 1.2 This test method is applicable to railing systems and rails having major structural components made of metal and secondary components made of metal or other materials such as wood, plastics, and glass. 1.3 The test method described can be used to determine whether the anchorage of permanent metal railing systems and rails complies with anticipated performance requirements. 1.4 Specifically, this test method covers procedures for determining the static tension, shear, and moment resistance of anchorages for permanent metal railing systems, and rails in structural elements made of concrete, masonry, wood, and metal as well as related products. 1.5 No consideration is given in this test method to any possible deterioration of anchorage systems, resulting from adverse environmental conditions. The performance of special tests covering this aspect may be desirable. 1.6 Should computations make it possible to provide the needed information, testing may be employed for purposes of verification. 1.7 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to inch-pound units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.8 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific hazard statements, see Section 6.

This part of BS 5395 gives recommendations for the design of stairs with straight flights, including landings and winders for all types of building and industrial walkways. NOTE 1 External walkways are covered in BS 8300. It does not apply to steps or stairs which are not connected to a building, for example, those which are part of the surrounding landscape or which provide entry to a property. Whilst information within this standard is relevant to external stairs, a range of additional issues such as durability, performance in variable environmental conditions and the inconsistency of natural lighting can mean that application of this standard alone does not address issues of safety and convenience in external situations. NOTE 2 BS 8300 addresses these issues in more detail. This standard does not cover spiral or helical stairs, which are addressed within BS 5395-2. Industrial stairs are covered in BS 4592-0. The standard does not apply to ramps, whether stepped or not, nor to ladders nor to steps within swimming pools. This standard does not cover limited-use stairs e.g. stairs to be used in loft or basement conversions, which will be addressed within BS 5395-4 ).
