The standard is thus applicable to the following building types; single family houses, apartment buildings, offices, educational buildings, hospitals, hotels and restaurants, sports facilities, wholesale and retail trade service buildings. - The standard specifies how different categories of criteria for the indoor environment can be used. But does not require certain criteria to be used. This is up to national regulations or individual project specifications. - The recommended criteria in this standard can also be used in national calculation methods, which may be different to the methodsreferred to here. - The standard does not prescribe design methods,but give input parameters to the disign of buildings, heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting systems. - The standard does not include criteria for local discomfort factors like draught, radiant temperature asymmetry, vertical air temperature differences and floor surface temperatures.

Guideline VDI 3807 applies to the determination and application of energy and water consumption characteristics for buildings and real properties to which final energy (heating energy including district heat, electricity) and water are supplied. Characteristic consumption values are valid for entire buildings and are determined from measured consumption values subject to the effects of various quantities (such as thermal insulation of the building, utilisation ratio of the heating system, use of the building, internal heat sources and drains, passive use of solar energy, behaviour of the user). Partial characteristics can be derived and/or calculated from measured values. In doing so, the information given in Parts 3, 4 and 5 have to be observed. When comparing characteristic values, building- and user-specific aspects must be considered.

The DIN V 18599 series of prestandards provides a methodology for calculating the overall energy balance of buildings. The described algorithm is applicable to the calculation of energy balances for: -- residential buildings and non-residential buildings; -- planned or new building construction and existing buildings. The procedure for calculating the balances is suitable for: -- balancing the energy use of buildings with partially pre-determined boundary conditions; -- balancing the energy use of buildings with freely-selectable boundary conditions from the general engineering aspect, e.g. with the objective of achieving a good comparison between calculated and measured energy ratings. The balance calculations take into account the energy use for: -- heating, -- ventilation, -- air conditioning (including cooling and humidification), -- heating the domestic hot water supply, and -- lighting of buildings, including the additional electric power input (auxiliary energy) which is directly related to the energy supply. This document provides an overview of the procedures for calculating the energy need, delivered energy and primary energy for heating, cooling, lighting and the domestic hot water supply of buildings. The central balance equations are described in this part. Furthermore, it explains the general terms which apply for all parts of the DIN V 18599 series. The general balance calculation method is outlined together with separate information on calculations for residential buildings and non-residential buildings. The procedure for defining zones of buildings is explained. In the Annex, factors for assessing the environmental effects of the energy use (primary energy factors) are listed. Figure 2 shows the scope of the present document as a diagram. For the reader's orientation, all other parts of the DIN V 18599 series contain an illustration similar to Figure 2 as shown here and in which the respective energy components dealt with are shown in colour.

It gives guidance on calculating the space requirement for technique centres, the structural arrangement of technique centres in a building. Although space for service shafts is not considered in this guideline, they certainly must not be ignored. The areas needed for service shafts will depend on the type of services that are installed, the number of main installation points and the layout of the technique centres and in the case of ventilation and air conditioning on the position of the supply air and exhaust air openings. Service shafts for the sanitary, heating, chilling and the electrical services occupy a smaller proportion of shaft space than that required for ventilation and air conditioning installations. A guideline figure of 1% to 3% of the gross floor area can be used for the space needed for service shafts.
