This European Standard is applicable to the construction and testing of drains and sewers normally buried in the ground and normally operating under gravity. The construction of pipelines operating under pressure is covered by this European Standard together with prEN 805 as appropriate. This European Standard is applicable to drains and sewers laid in trenches, under embankments or above ground. Trenchless construction will be covered in prEN 12889. Additionally other local or national regulations should be taken into account, e.g. concerning health and safety, pavement reinstatement and requirements for leaktightness testing etc.
Construction and testing of drains and sewers
This European Standard specifies general requirements for components such as pipes, fittings and manholes with their respective joints intended for use in discharge pipes, drains and sewers which operate as gravity systems where any pressure likely to occur is a maximum of 40 kPa This European Standard provides the general basis for the preparation or revision of product standards. It is not applicable for the evaluation of products. It is applicable as a reference for drawing up a product specification, if there is no product standard available. This European Standard includes marking, quality control and certification requirements. This European Standard comprises: - common requirements for all components; - specific requirements for discharge components for use inside buildings or attached to the external surfaces of buildings; - specific requirements for components for use in drain and sewer systems. In product standards, combinations of these requirements may be applied where appropriate, e.g. for the components buried in the ground inside the building structure. This European Standard covers components to be used in conveying in a satisfactory manner - domestic waste water; - rainwater and surface water; and, - other waste waters (e.g. industrial waste water) that will not damage the components. This European Standard applies to components of circular and other cross-sections. This European Standard applies equally to components which are factory-made and to those constructed on site, where applicable.

1 General This European Standard specifies the performance, design, operation, maintenance and installation with related verification and test method for positive pressure driven sewerage systems outside buildings carrying wastewater. It does not provide for the evaluation of conformity of systems to this European Standard. It does not specify the detail design or materials of construction of individual components within the system. This European Standard covers positive pressure sewerage systems designed for transporting wastewater, defined as: Domestic sewage arising from dwellings and commercial properties but excluding stormwater and rainwater. This European Standard covers the design of a PSS and some requirements of products used together with the PSS in order to ensure the performance of a PSS. The components of the system and in conjunction with the system should be evaluated by reference to the appropriate product standard. In the absence of a product standard, this standard may be used as a reference for drawing up a specification for that product. 2 Limit of design Intermediate pressure booster equipment is not covered in this standard. The use of compressed air as the only means of generating pressure is not covered in this standard The design requirements of this standard are minimum requirements and do not constitute in themselves a comprehensive design sufficient to ensure a correctly functioning system. Every system must be individually designed. Where proprietary components are employed, account should be taken of the advice of the component supplier. 3 Application of pressure sewerage systems (PSS) Information on the use of pressure sewerage systems is given in A.l. 4 Sources of additional information Documents which, whilst relating to specific systems, contain details which can be used within the framework of this standard are listed in informative annex C.
