This standard specifies the requirements and methods of test for the construction, safety, rational use of energy, classification and marking of 2 and 3 family gas-fired domestic radiant convector heating appliances not exceeding a nominal heat input of 15 kW based on the net calorific value and which incorporate a natural draught burner. This standard applies to open flued independent radiant/convector gas fires not connected directly or by means of an adapter to an open flue. The appliance and flue are separated by a void which can be in one or more of the following forms. —Fireplace recess. —Builder's opening. —Metal flue box to BS 715. —Pre-cast flue to BS 1289-1. The void is covered by a closure plate, which may be an integral part of the appliance, or a separate plate; in either case it is regarded as a part of the appliance and is supplied with it. These appliances are designed to discharge their products of combustion into the void behind the closure plate; they also have an integral flue break which may be in the form of a draught diverter or an open front. Although all appliances covered by this standard are radiant/convectors they have traditionally been divided into the following types. —Radiant/convectors. —Live fuel effect (LFE). —Inset live fuel effect (ILFE). This document does not apply to the following. —Decorative fuel effect appliances. —Catalytic combustion appliances. —Appliances in which the supply of combustion air and/or the evacuation of the products of combustion is achieved by mechanical means. —Appliances which permit automatic ignition whilst unattended. There are no specific thermal efficiency requirements appropriate to these types of appliance as: c) all the heat produced by the combustion process is released into the space to be heated; d) the requirements with regard to the combustion performance, which is a safety matter, ensure the effective burning of the fuel gas. It does not cover appliances incorporating electrically operated gas control systems. Annex A gives the details of the categories of appliances marketed in various countries. Requirements for appliances given in this standard assume that the supply of gas from the container will be governed by a pressure regulator having a maximum nominal outlet pressure of 50 mbar. This European Standard does not cover LPG containers for liquefied petroleum gas neither their associated regulator nor tubing and flexible hoses which shall comply with national requirements in force. 1.1 Scope 1.1.1 This Standard applies to newly produced gas-fired unvented room heaters and gas-fired unvented decorative room heaters for connection to the house fuel supply system (see Part IV, Definitions), hereinafter referred to as room heaters or appliances, constructed entirely of new, unused parts and materials, having input ratings up to and including 40,000 Btu per hour (11 723 W) except: 1. Unvented room heaters suitable for installation in bedrooms shall have input ratings of 10,00 Btu per hour (2 931 W) or less; 2. Unvented room heaters suitable for installation in bathrooms shall have input ratings of 6,000 Btu (1 758 W) or less. Unvented room heaters are: a. For sale with natural gas; b. For use with manufactured gas; c. For use with mixed gas; d. For use with liquefied petroleum gases; e. For use with LP gas-air mixtures; and f. For manufactured (mobile) home aftermarket installation for use with natural gas only or for use with liquefied petroleum gases only. Unvented room heaters for installation in bathrooms shall be wall-mounted. Unvented room heaters for installation in bedrooms shall be wall mounted or for installation in solid-fuel burning fireplaces. An unvented gas log (see part IV, Definitions), provided with means for mounting the burner base assembly to the floor of the solid-fuel burning fireplace, shall be considered as complying with the wall-mounted requirement for installation in bedrooms or bathrooms. The construction of unvented room heaters for use with the above-mentioned gases is covered under part I. The performance of unvented room heaters for use with the above gases is covered under part II. 1.1.2 Special construction provisions applicable to room heaters for manufactured (mobile) home aftermarket installation are outlined under 1.1.1-f, 1.21.4-t and 1.22.2-i. 1.1.3 If a value for measurement as given in this standard is followed by an equivalent value in other units, the first stated value is to be regarded as the specification 1.1.4 All references to psi throughout this standard are to be considered gage pressure unless otherwise specified. 1.1.5 Exhibit D, List of Reference Standards, contains a list of standards referenced in this standard, and sources from which these reference standards may be obtained.
