Hearing measurements in an audiometric test room may be conducted for different audiometric purposes over different test frequency ranges. However, if the ambient noise level is excessively high, some hearing threshold levels measured in that environment will be inaccurate. This occurs because excessively high ambient noise will create an elevation of hearing threshold levels. This is a psychoacoustic phenomenon called masking. Exclusion of all ambient noise from an audiometric test room is not feasible nor practical from structural and cost considerations. However, to ensure that hearing tests are not influenced by excessive ambient noise masking, there is a need to specify maximum permissible ambient noise levels (MPANLs) that can be allowed in an audiometric test room. This is true particularly when testing is done at sound pressure levels for pure tones corresponding to 0 dB hearing level. Further, there is a need to specify MPANLs for different audiometric conditions, test frequency ranges, and earphone types that will permit testing at reference equivalent threshold levels specified in ANSI S3.6- 1996 American National Standard Specification for Audiometers. This Standard includes the specification and measurement of MPANLs in an audiometric test room. Within this Standard, MPANLs are specified for octave and one-third octave band intervals from 125 to 8000 Hz for the audiometric conditions of testing with ears covered using a supra-aural and insert earphone and ears not covered for the test frequency ranges 125 to 8000 Hz, 250 to 8000 Hz, and 500 to 8000 Hz.

1.1 This practice describes procedures for the ultrasonic examination of bulk materials or parts by transmitting pulsed, longitudinal waves through a liquid couplant into the material and observing the indications of reflected waves (Fig. 1). It covers only examinations in which one search unit is used as both transmitter and receiver (pulse-echo) and in which the part or material being examined is totally submerged in the couplant (immersion testing). This practice includes general requirements and procedures which may be used for detecting discontinuities and for making a relative or approximate evaluation of the size of discontinuities. 1.2 This practice complements Practice E214 by providing more detailed procedures for the selection and calibration of the inspection system and for evaluation of the indications obtained. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.1 This Standard provides recommendations for specifying and testing the susceptibility of acoustical instruments to radiated electromagnetic fields. The instruments may be powered by batteries or from a public supply of electric power. Recommendations related to testing an instrument’s susceptibility to electromagnetic radiation are given in annex A. Annex B contains a bibliography of background information. 1.2 The Standard does not contain recommendations for specifying and testing the susceptibility of an acoustical instrument to conducted electromagnetic fields. The Standard does not contain recommendations to limit the radio-frequency electromagnetic fields that may be radiated by an acoustical instrument. It does not provide recommendations for the influence of radio-frequency fields on optional external cabling or ancillary devices. The Standard is not applicable to audiometers or hearing aids. 1.3 This Standard provides recommendations for electric and magnetic field strengths and for radiofrequency and acoustical test signals. 1.4 The Standard covers the range of radio frequencies from 25 MHz to 500 MHz, and an extended range from 25 MHz to 1 GHz (corresponding to wavelengths from 12 m to 0.333 m). 1.5 The recommendations of this Standard may be used to develop radio-frequency electromagnetic susceptibility requirements for specific acoustical instruments. For individual instrument standards, the recommended specifications for electromagnetic test-signal frequencies, and maximum field strengths, or any other recommendation of this Standard, may be modified as appropriate.
