This International Standard specifies the pretreatments required for soil samples that are to be subjected to physico-chemical analyses of stable and non-volatile parameters and describes the following five types of pretreatment of samples: drying, crushing, sieving, dividing and milling. The pretreatment procedures described in this International Standard are not applicable if they affect the results of the determinations to be made. This International Standard is also not applicable to samples when volatile compounds are measured. In general, International Standards for analytical methods will state when it is necessary to adopt other procedures.

This part of ISO 10381 defines the methods that should be applied when sampling soil from stockpiles. This part of ISO 10381 only includes the sampling of the soil material itself, i.e. the solid phase. It applies to the sampling of soil material that is present in a stockpile, generally a heap of soil material that is lying above the surface of the location. The underlying reason for sampling the soil can differ widely as can the subsequent analysis on the obtained samples. This part of ISO 10381 therefore gives guidance on the various aspects that, together, describe the sampling activity: ⎯ the definition of a sampling plan; ⎯ the choice of an adequate sampling strategy; ⎯ the sampling technique to be applied; ⎯ the sample pretreatment directly after sampling (when necessary); ⎯ the packing, preservation, storing, transport and delivery of the sample. Given the wide differences in circumstances for all of the above-mentioned sampling steps, this part of ISO 10381 provides information on how to obtain clear and simple instructions for the sampling personnel.

This part of ISO 23611 specifies a method for sampling and handling earthworms from field soils as a prerequisite for using these animals as bioindicators (e.g. to assess the quality of a soil as a habitat for organisms). Basic information on the ecology of earthworms and their use as bioindicators in the terrestrial environment can be found in the references listed in the bibliography. This part of ISO 23611 applies to all terrestrial biotopes in which earthworms occur. The sampling design of field studies in general is specified in ISO 10381-1 (see also Reference [38]) and guidance on the determination of effects of pollutants on earthworms in field situations is given in ISO 11268-3. These details can vary according to the national requirements or the climatic/regional conditions of the site to be sampled (see also Annex C). This part of ISO 23611 is not applicable for semi-terrestrial soils and it can be difficult to use under extreme climatic or geographical conditions (e.g. in high mountains). Methods for some other soil organism groups, such as collembolans, are covered in other parts of ISO 23611. This part of ISO 23611 does not cover the pedological characterization of the site which is highly recommendable when sampling soil invertebrates. ISO 10390, ISO 10694, ISO 11272, ISO 11274, ISO 11277, ISO 11461 and ISO 11465 are more suitable for measuring pH, particle size distribution, C/N ratio, organic carbon content and water-holding capacity.

This International Standard gives criteria for gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identification of target compounds in soil samples. This International Standard is intended for use with standards developed for the determination of specific compounds. The identification criteria are based on the comparison of retention times followed by interpretation of the electron ionization mass spectra, or if necessary, additional mass spectrometric techniques and other relevant factors. NOTE This International Standard is also applicable for other environmental samples.

This International Standard specifies a semi-static method for the determination of the effects of contaminants on growth and survival of young snails, usually Helix aspersa aspersa Muller. The animals are exposed via the cutaneous and digestive route using a test substrate (artificial or natural soil according to the objective of the study) to which defined amounts of the following are added: — substances or preparations; — soils (contaminated or of unknown quality) or waste materials. A static method may be implemented in addition to the semi-static method (optional). This method is described in Annex A. This method does not apply to volatile substances, i.e. substances for which the Henry constant, H, or the air/water partition coefficient is over 1, or for which the vapour pressure is over 0,013 3 Pa at 25 °C. This test takes into account the possible change in the test substance, preparation, soil or waste material because the test mixture is prepared and renewed every 7 days during the 28-day test period.

This International Standard specifies the quantitative determination of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) according to the priority list of the Environmental Protection Agency, USA (EPA, 1982). This International Standard is applicable to all types of soil (field-moist or chemically dried samples), covering a wide range of PAH contamination levels. Under the conditions specified in this International Standard, a lower limit of application of 0,01 mg/kg (expressed as dry matter) can be ensured for each individual PAH.
