This International Standard specifies a static headspace method for quantitative gas chromatographic determination of volatile aromatic and halogenated hydrocarbons and selected aliphatic ethers in soil. This International Standard is applicable to all types of soil. The limit of determination is dependent on the detection system used and the quality of the methanol grade used for the extraction of the soil sample. Under the conditions specified in this International Standard, the following limits of determinations apply (expressed on the basis of dry matter): a) when using gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID), the typical limit of determination is 0,2 mg/kg for volatile aromatic hydrocarbons and 0,5 mg/kg for aliphatic ethers as methyl fert-butyl ether (MTBE) and tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME); b) when using gas chromatography with an electron capture detector (GC-ECD), the typical limit of determination is 0,01 mg/kg to 0,2 mg/kg for volatile halogenated hydrocarbons. NOTE Lower limits of determination can be achieved by using mass spectrometry (MS) with selected ion detection.

This International Standard specifies a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for qualitative and quantitative determination of herbicides of various substance classes in soils. This method covers triazines including their related metabolites, phenyl urea compounds and other herbicides. Compounds are identified and quantified with UV-detection. The limit of detection for triazines and phenyl urea compounds is - 0,01 mg/kg dry matter. It is dependent upon both the compound and the soil matrix.

This index test method indicates an unvegetated RECP’s ability to reduce soil erosion caused by shear stress induced by moving water under bench-scale conditions. Only tangential shear is measured in this method. Radial and uplift forces generated by the circular motion of the water are not measured. This test method is bench-scale and therefore, appropriate as an index test for general soil/product composite behavior under hydraulic shear conditions, and for product quality assurance/conformance testing. The results of this test shall not be interpreted as indicative of field performance.1.1 This index test method establishes the guidelines, requirements and procedures for evaluating the ability of unvegetated Rolled Erosion Control Products (RECPs) to protect soil (sand) from hydraulically induced shear stress in a bench-scale apparatus.1.2 This index test method utilizes bench-scale testing procedures and shall not be interpreted as indicative of field performance.1.3 This index test is not intended to replace full-scale simulation or field testing in acquisition of performance values that are required in the design of erosion control measures utilizing unvegetated RECPs.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. 1.1 This test method may be used to determine the water content of soils and the in-place density of soils using a TDR apparatus.1.2 This test method applies to soils that have 30 % or less by weight of their particles retained on the 19.0-mm ( 3/4-in.) sieve.1.3 This test method is suitable for use as a means of acceptance for compacted fill or embankments.1.4 This test method may not be suitable for organic and highly plastic soils.1.5 All observed and calculated values shall conform to the guidelines for significant digits and rounding established in Practice D 6026.1.5.1 The method used to specify how data are collected, calculated, or recorded in this standard is not directly related to the accuracy to which the data can be applied in design or other uses, or both. How one applies the results obtained using this standard is beyond its scope.1.6 Two alternative procedures are provided.1.6.1 Procedure A involves two tests in the field, an in-place test and a test in a mold containing material excavated from the in-place test location. The apparent dielectric constant is determined in both tests.1.6.2 Procedure B involves only an in-place test by incorporating a bulk electrical conductivity in addition to the apparent dielectric constant.1.7 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. This International Standard specifies a method for the quantitative determination of the mineral oil (hydrocarbon) content in field-moist soil samples by gas chromatography. The method is applicable to mineral oil contents (mass fraction) between 100 mg/kg and 10 000 mg/kg soil, expressed as dry matter, and can be adapted to lower limits of detection. This International Standard is applicable to the determination of all hydrocarbons with a boiling range of 175 °C to 525 °C, of n-alkanes from C10H22 to C40H82, of isoalkanes, cycloalkanes, alkylbenzenes, alkylnaphthalenes and polycyclic aromatic compounds, provided that they are not absorbed on the specified column during the clean-up procedure. This International Standard is not applicable to the quantitative determination of hydrocarbons < C10 originating from gasolines. On the basis of the peak pattern of the gas chromatogram obtained, and of the boiling points of the individual n-alkanes listed in Annex B, the approximate boiling range of the mineral oil and some qualitative information on the composition of the contamination can be obtained.

This International Standard specifies a laboratory method for the simultaneous determination in soils of the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and of the soil water-retention characteristic. It is applicable only to measurement of the drying or desorption curve. Application of the method is restricted to soil samples which are, as far as possible, homogeneous. The method is not applicable to soils which shrink in the range of matric head hm = 0 cm to hm = -800 cm. The range of the determination of the conductivity depends on the soil type. It lies between matric heads of approximately hm = -50 cm and hm = -700 cm. The range of the determination of the water-retention characteristic lies between matric heads of approximately hm = 0 cm and hm = -800 cm. NOTE 1 An infiltrometer method can be used to determine hydraulic conductivities near saturation. NOTE 2 ISO 11274 gives methods to determine the water-retention characteristic for matric heads between 0 cm and -15 000 cm.
