This document specifies the minimum performance requirements for hot air treatment intended for application against specific classes of wood attacking organism. It specifies the minimum performance criteria to be achieved by hot air treatment. NOTE Until now sufficient practical experience and results of scientific tests are available only for heat treatments using hot air as a medium to increase the temperature inside building components up to a threshold lethal to wood destroying organisms. Therefore, this document is restricted to hot air treatments although other measures like, for example, radio waves or electric blankets may be useful means for limited and special applications. This document is applicable only to hot air treatment, in so far as it is intended to cure attack by wood destroying beetles and the dry rot fungus (Serpula lacrymans). This Technical Specification is not applicable to eradicate an attack by termites or by fungi other than the dry rot fungus (Serpula lacrymans). Hot air treatment as described in this document does not provide subsequent preventive protection against attack by wood-destroying organisms. This document does not define the equipment, techniques or precise operation procedures required to achieve the parameters given in clause 5 for any set of practical circumstances. Specifications for particular practical circumstances have to be developed on a case by case basis by expert advisers/consultants.

1.1 This terminology covers a repository of definitions essential for the business of Committee D07.1.2 The following criteria shall be followed by Subcommittee D07.91 in selecting terms and associated definitions for inclusion in this standard.1.2.1 Terms and associated definitions shall be selected if they are in general use in the conduct of the standards over which D07 has jurisdiction.1.2.2 Terms and associated definitions in general industrial or technical use that are not unique to wood or wood-based products are not included.1.2.3 Terms and associated definitions that are unique to a single D07 standard and defined therein or generally understood or adequately defined in other readily available sources may not be included in Terminology D 9.1.3 When a term is used in an ASTM document for which Committee D07 is responsible, it is included in Terminology D 9 only when judged an essential term by subcommittee D07.91.1.4 A definition is a single sentence with additional information included in discussion notes.1.5 Terms and definitions shall be reviewed every 5 years; the year of last review is appended.

This test method is useful in determining the relative anti-swelling efficiency of various water-repellent formulations when applied to wood. It is the initial means of estimating the ability of water-repellent treated wood to perform satisfactorily when exposed to liquid water environments. The swelling differences of untreated wood species when subjected to water immersion can also be determined by this test method. This method is a basic screening test and thus provides an initial determination of the anti-swelling efficiency of water repellents. It is a qualitative method designed to provide a reproducible means of establishing: (1) the anti-swelling efficiency of water-repellent formulations, and (2) the relative swelling of untreated wood species when both are exposed to liquid water environments.1.1 This test method is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of water-repellent compositions for retarding dimensional changes in coated wood submerged in water. It can also be used to measure the differential swelling of untreated wood when exposed to liquid water environments. The compositions tested are designed to be mixed until uniform and applied by brush, roller, dip or spray to an exterior wood surface.1.2The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.1 This practice covers the determination of strength values for clear wood of different species in the unseasoned condition, unadjusted for end use, applicable to the establishment of working stresses for different solid wood products such as lumber, laminated wood, plywood, and round timbers. Presented are:1.1.1 Procedures by which test values obtained on small clear specimens may be combined with density data from extensive forest surveys to make them more representative,1.1.2 Guidelines for the interpretation of the data in terms of assigned values for combinations of species or regional divisions within a species to meet special marketing needs, and1.1.3 Information basic to the translation of the clear wood values into working stresses for different solid wood products for different end uses.1.1.4 For species where density survey data are not as yet available for the re-evaluation of average strength properties, the presently available data from tests made under the sampling methods and procedures of Test Methods D 143 or Practice E 105 are provided with appropriate provision for their application and use. Because of the comprehensive manner in which the density survey is undertaken, it follows that the re-evaluated strength data are intended to be representative of the forest stand, or rather large forest subdivisions.1.1.5 Some useful mechanical properties (tensile strengths parallel and perpendicular to grain and modulus of rigidity for a longitudinal-transverse plane) have not been extensively evaluated. Methods are described for estimating these properties by their relation to other properties.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. These test methods provide procedures that are applicable under true field conditions, such as in a plant with specimens not at moisture equilibrium. The data established by these test methods can be used as follows: 4.2.1 Develop strength and stiffness properties for the population represented by the material being tested (that is, individual grades, grade combinations, species, species groups, or any other defined, identifiable sample). 4.2.2 Confirm the validity of strength and stiffness properties for the population represented by the material being tested. 4.2.3 Investigate the effect of parameters that may influence the strength and stiffness properties of the material, such as moisture content, temperature, knot size and location, or slope of grain. The procedures chosen in accordance with these test methods shall be fully documented in the report to facilitate correlation with test results obtained through the use of traditional procedures, such as those set forth in Test Methods D 198.Note 18212;A proof load may be used, which will permit the determination of a specified strength percentile without testing the total sample to destruction. Designing a test program on the basis of proof loading can be complex, requiring consideration in relation to the objectives of the test program. Guidance on this matter can be found in the paper by Johnson.1.1 These test methods cover the determination of the mechanical properties of stress-graded lumber and other wood-base structural material.1.2 These test methods appear in the following order: SectionBending edge-wiseBending flat-wise:Center point loadingThird point loading Axial strength in tensionAxial strength in compression 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use.
