ISO 2000:2003 provides guidance on the specification of technically specified rubber (TSR). A grading system is proposed, based on the origin of the natural rubber content and on properties exhibited by the rubber. This International Standard is intended for use by parties involved in the procurement of TSR, and is intended to form a basis from which requirements for a particular case may be more closely specified. In accordance with Specification D2227, shipments of TSR10 and TSR20 must meet a minimum initial Wallace plasticity (Po) of 30 to be accepted. However, even with this minimum restriction, the uncured viscoelastic or “processability” properties are allowed to vary greatly. This variation in properties can significantly affect the quality and efficiency of a factory operation. Bales of TSR10 or TSR20 which are lower in their uncured elastic quality (“soft” rubber) in some cases may impart better processing properties to tire innerliners, cushion gums, and sidewalls. “Soft” bales sometimes impart better building tack, better mold flow, and lower extrusion die swell with better dimensional stability. Also, these “soft” rubber bales may dissolve faster in solvents for adhesion dipping. Bales of TSR10 or TSR20 that are higher in their uncured elastic quality (“hard” rubber) in some cases generate greater shearing during the initial stages of a factory mix, which result in a faster breakdown and a shorter mix cycle. Therefore, in a factory operation, sometimes segregating TSR10 or TSR20 shipments into “soft” and “hard” categories can improve the efficiency and quality of a factory operation.1.1 This practice covers the sorting of natural rubber bales of TSR10 or TSR20 in the factory according to their predicted processing performance based on differences in viscoelastic properties. 1.2 This practice determines which bales should be used in factory compounds which benefit from using “soft” natural rubber versus which work better with “hard” natural rubber.

The test procedures described in this standard were developed when the chief use for turpentine was as a solvent. Currently however, the chief use for turpentine (and pinenes) is as raw materials for the production of resins and synthetic organic chemicals. Thus the chemical composition of turpentines and pinenes is extremely important and tests, in addition to the ones described in these test methods, are required in order to fully characterize turpentines and pinenes. The most widely used technique for determining the chemical composition of turpentines (and pinenes) is gas chromatography (see Test Methods D 6387).1.1 These test methods cover procedures for sampling and testing turpentine, as defined by the Code of Federal Regulations and Terminology D 804. These test methods are also used for the sampling and testing of pinenes, the major components of most turpentines.1.2 These test methods primarily measure the physical rather than the chemical properties of turpentines and pinenes. As turpentines and pinenes are currently used chiefly as chemical raw materials for the production of resins and synthetic organic chemicals, chemical composition is also very important. Consequently, testing the chemical composition of turpentines and pinenes by gas chromatography has displaced these test methods to a large extent.
