This International Standard provides criteria for quality assurance and control, and evaluation of performance of radiobioassay service laboratories. Criteria and guidance for in vivo radiobioassay and in vitro radiobioassay are given in separate clauses. The following are within the scope of this International Standard: ⎯ the accuracy of ⎯ in vivo measurements of activity and quantities of selected important radionuclides in test phantoms, and ⎯ in vitro measurements of activity and quantities of selected important radionuclides in test samples; ⎯ minimal requirements for detection limit; ⎯ minimum testing levels and testing ranges; ⎯ requirements for reporting radiobioassay results by service laboratories; ⎯ quality assurance in service laboratories; ⎯ quality control in service laboratories; ⎯ protocol for reporting test evaluations by service laboratories to the testing laboratory; ⎯ default procedures when the service laboratory customer does not specify the performance criteria; ⎯ applications of y# for different methods (see Annexes A and B). The following are not within the scope of this International Standard: ⎯ detailed radiochemical methods for separating radionuclides from biological samples; ⎯ detailed procedures for in vivo and in vitro radioactivity measurements; ⎯ biokinetic data and mathematical models for converting radiobioassay results into dose (dose assessment); ⎯ procedures for the preparation and distribution of test samples and phantoms by the testing laboratories.

This test method is intended to provide a standardized test procedure of protective materials to ensure comparable results among manufacturers and users. This test method involves measurement of the attenuation of X-rays by protective clothing material at an accelerating potential (kVp) between 60 and 130 kVp. These energies are considered to be representative of those commonly used during medical diagnosis and treatment. The reporting of the attenuation at a specific X-ray energy is intended to allow the end user organization to assess the attenuating properties of the protective clothing material at that energy level.1.1 This test method establishes procedures for measuring the attenuation of X-rays by protective materials at accelerating potentials from 60 to 130 kVp.1.2 This test method provides attenuation values of primary beam X-radiation.1.3 This test method applies to both leaded and non-leaded radiation protective clothing materials.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

The quality of a supplier of a personal-dosimetry service (referred to in this text as a "processor") depends on both the characteristics of the approved (type-tested) dosimetry system and the training and experience of the staff, together with the calibration procedures and quality assurance programmes. This International Standard specifies the criteria and the test procedures to be used for the periodic verification of the performance of personal-dosemeter processors. The performance verification may be carried out as a part of the approval procedure for the personal-dosimetry system or as an independent check to verify that the processor fulfils the performance requirements specified in an International Standard. This International Standard applies to personal dosemeters for the assessment of external photon radiation with an energy between 10 keV and 9 MeV. It covers all types of personal dosemeter needing laboratory processing (e.g. photographic-film, thermoluminescent or radiophotoluminescent dosemeters) and involving continuous measurements or measurements repeated regularly at fixed time intervals (e.g. several weeks, one month). note: 1) If this International Standard is applied to a dosimetry system for which no approval (pattern or type test) has been provided, then in the following text approval or type test should be read as the technical data sheet provided by the manufacturer or as the data sheet required by the regulatory authority.
