The requirements of this part of IEC 61577 are applicable to instruments which are used to measure radon decay product activity concentration and/or volume potential alpha energy in work-places, in dwellings and outdoors. The standard applies practically to all types of instruments that are based on grab sampling, continuous sampling technique and integrating measurement methods which include electronic equipment. The measurement of activity retained by a sampling device, for example a filtering device, can be made both during sampling or after the completion of a collection cycle. General testing procedures and the different types of instrumentation used for measuring radon decay product activity concentration are described in IEC 61577-1. The object of this part of IEC 61577 is to describe the specific requirements for testing instruments intended for measuring the activity concentration of airborne radon decay products and/or the volume potential alpha energy. These requirements specify test procedures, radiation characteristics, electrical, mechanical, safety and environmental characteristics as well as identification certificates. Requirements are to be applied in accordance with the general principles for sampling airborne radioactive materials of ISO 2889.

This European standard specifies performance criteria (clause 4) and test methods (clause 5, annexes A to D) for aerosol samplers and other instruments used to measure aerosol concentrations in workplace air. The performance criteria specified apply only to the process of sampling (or otherwise sensing) aerosol particles. Although analysis of samples collected in the course of testing is usually necessary in order to evaluate the sampler performance, the specified test methods ensure that analytical errors are kept very low during testing and do not contribute significantly to the end result.

This International Standard provides parameters based on values for hand/arm and approach speeds and the methodology to determine the minimum distances from sensing or actuating devices of protective equipment to a danger zone. These specific devices are: a) trip devices as defined in EN 292-1:1991, 3.23.5 (specifically electro-sensitive protective equipment, pressure sensitive mats), including those used additionally to initiate operation; b) two-hand control devices as defined in EN 292-1:1991, 3.23.4 and covered by ISO 13851. NOTE For the purposes of this International Standard, hold-to-run controls, which are designed to be actuated with one hand, are not considered to be protective equipment. This International Standard does not apply to protective equipment which is intended to be moved, without tools, nearer to the danger zone than the calculated distance, e.g. pendant two-hand control devices. The minimum distances derived from this International Standard do not apply to protective equipment used to detect the presence of persons within an area already protected by a guard or electro-sensitive protective equipment.

This International Standard specifies general requirements for the design and construction of guards provided primarily to protect persons from mechanical hazards. This International Standard applies primarily to machines which will be manufactured after it is published. Attention is drawn to the use of guards to minimize exposure to non-mechanical hazards. The requirements are applicable if fixed and movable guards are used. This International Standard does not cover those parts of guards which actuate interlocking devices. These are covered in IS0 14119. This International Standard does not provide requirements for special systems relating specifically to mobility or to the ability to lift loads such as rollover protective structures (ROPS) and falling-object protective structures (FOPS).

1.1 This test method covers a procedure for determining the photopic luminance of photoluminescent (phosphorescent) markings. It does not cover scotopic or mesopic measurements.1.2 When reference is made regarding photoluminescence in the text of this test method, it implies phosphorescence.1.3 The values stated in SI units are the standard. The values given in parentheses are provided for information purposes only.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Airborne hexavalent chromium is carcinogenic (1),4 and analytical methods for the measurement of this species in workplace aerosols are desired. Worker exposure to hexavalent chromium occurs primarily through inhalation (1), and this test method provides a means for exposure assessment to this highly toxic species. Analytical results from this procedure can be used for regulatory compliance purposes (2).1.1 This test method specifies a method for the determination of the time-weighted average mass concentration of hexavalent chromium in workplace air.1.2 The method is applicable to the personal sampling of the inhalable fraction of airborne particles, as defined in ISO 7708, and to area (static) sampling.1.3 The sample dissolution procedure specifies separate procedures for soluble and insoluble hexavalent chromium.1.4 The method is applicable to the determination of masses of 0.01 956;g to 10 956;g of hexavalent chromium per sample without dilution.1.5 The concentration range for hexavalent chromium in air for which this procedure is applicable is approximately 0.1 956;g/m179; to 100 956;g/m179;, assuming 1 m179; of air sample. The range can be extended upwards by appropriate dilution.1.6 Interconversion of trivalent and hexavalent chromium species may occur during sampling and sample preparation, but these processes are minimized to the extent possible by the sampling and sample preparation procedures employed.1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Vapor inhalation is the primary hazard encountered in the use of chlorinated solvents. The greatest potential for over exposure to these solvent vapors occurs where the employee is exposed to the high concentrations of vapor that may be found in confined areas. The seriousness of this hazard is often underestimated by those performing this type of work. This practice is designed for use by employers in developing their own specific standards for vessel or confined area entry. Many of these areas are considered as permit-required confined spaces as defined by OSHA (29 CFR 1910.146). The determination of the applicability of these requirements is the responsibility of the user. This practice represents the minimum requirements for entry into any confined area containing halogenated solvents. This practice does not address all of the requirements contained in the OSHA confined spaces standard. Development and implementation of training programs, recordkeeping, and other additional requirements of the OSHA standard are the responsibility of the user.1.1 This practice covers recognized procedures necessary to protect the health and safety of workers required to enter confined spaces. These procedures are particularly applicable to entry into the confined areas associated with the use of halogenated organic solvents.1.2 Confined areas addressed in this practice include, but are not limited to: vapor degreasers, cold cleaning tanks, storage vessels, tank cars and trucks, van trailers, ships or barges, pits or sumps, and unventilated rooms.1.3 This practice does not necessarily address entry into all confined spaces nor does it address the decision strategy involved in requiring such entry.1.4 Although this practice describes specific safety steps to be taken for entry into confined spaces, it is not intended to preclude the use of any additional measures that may be deemed necessary for a particular situation.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
