This International Standard specifies the parameters required to describe finally processed and, where required, blended natural gas. Such gas is referred to subsequently in this text simply as "natural gas". The main text of this standard contains a list of these parameters, their units and references to measurement standards. Informative annexes give examples of typical values for these parameters, with the main emphasis on health and safety. In defining the parameters governing composition, physical properties and trace constituents, consideration has also been given to existing natural gases to ensure their continuing viability. The question of interchangeability is dealt with in annex A clause A.2.

This part of ISO 6326 gives a brief description of standardized methods that can be used for the determination of sulfur compounds in natural gas. The principle of each method is described generally, the range of concentrations for which the method is suitable is indicated, and the analytical range and precision of each method is given. It should enable the user to select judiciously the proper method for the application being considered. Sulfur analysis is performed in order to determine a) total sulfur, b) sulfur contained in specific groups (e.g. thiol sulfur), c) individual sulfur compounds, and d) specific groups of sulfur compounds. The standardized methods available in the field of sulfur analysis are ⎯ the Wickbold combustion method: for total sulfur determination (ISO 4260), ⎯ the Lingener combustion method: for total sulfur determination (ISO 6326-5), ⎯ gas chromatography: for determination of individual sulfur compounds (ISO 19739), and ⎯ potentiometry: for determination of hydrogen sulfide, carbonyl sulfide and thiol compounds (ISO 6326-3). Other methods for the determination of sulfur compounds are available but are not considered here. Table 1 gives an overview of the standardized methods which can be used for the determination of total sulfur, hydrogen sulfide, carbonyl sulfide, tetrahydrothiophene, thiol sulfur, individual thiols, individual thiophenes, individual organic sulfides and disulfides.

ISO 23874:2006 describes the performance requirements for analysis of treated natural gas of transmission or pipeline quality in sufficient detail so that the hydrocarbon dewpoint temperature can be calculated using an appropriate equation of state. ISO 23874:2006 can be applied to gases that have maximum dewpoint temperatures (cricondentherms) between 0 °C and - 50 °C. The pressures at which these maximum dewpoint temperatures are calculated are in the range 2 MPa (20 bar) to 5 MPa (50 bar). The procedure given in ISO 23874:2006 covers the measurement of hydrocarbons in the range C5 to C12. n-Pentane, which is quantitatively measured using ISO 6974 (all parts), is used as a bridge component and all C6 and higher hydrocarbons are measured relative to n-pentane. Major components are measured using ISO 6974 (all parts) and the ranges of components that can be measured are as defined in ISO 6974-1.

This test method is useful in determining the concentration of hydrogen sulfide in gaseous samples and in verifying compliance with operational needs and/or environmental limitations for H2S content. The automated performance operation of this method allows unattended measurement of H2S concentration. The user is referred to Practice D 7166 for unattended on-line use of instrumentation based upon the lead acetate reaction rate method.1.1 This test method covers the determination of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in gaseous fuels. It is applicable to the measurement of H2S in natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), substitute natural gas, landfill gas, sewage treatment off gasses, recycle gas, flare gasses, and mixtures of fuel gases. This method can also be used to measure the hydrogen sulfide concentration in carbon dioxide. Air does not interfere. The applicable range is 0.1 to 16 parts per million by volume (ppm/v) (approximately 0.1 to 22 mg/m3) and may be extended to 100 % H2S by manual or automatic volumetric dilution. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

ISO 12213 specifies methods for the calculation of compression factors of natural gases, natural gases containing a synthitic admixture and similar mixtures at conditions under which the mixture can exist only as a gas. This part of ISO 12213 specifies a method for the calculation of compression factors when the detailed composition of the gas by mole fractions is known, together with the relevant pressures and temperatures. The method is applicable to pipiline quality gases within the ranges of pressure p and temperature T at which transmission and distribution operations normally take place, with an uncertainty of about 0,1%. It can be applied, with greater uncertainty, to wider range of gas composition, pressure and temperature (see Annex E). More detail concerning the scope and field of application of the method is given in ISO 12213-1.

ISO 12213 specifies methods for the calculation of compression factors of natural gases, natural gases containing a synthetic admixture and similar mixtures at conditions under which the mixture can exist only as a gas. It is divided into three parts: this part of ISO 12213 gives an introduction and provides guidelines for the methods of calculation described in ISO 12213-2 and ISO 12213-3. Part 2 gives a method for use where the detailed molar composition of the gas is known. Part 3 gives a method for use where a less detailed analysis, comprising superior calorific value (volumetric basis), relative density, carbon dioxide content and (if non-zero) hydrogen content, is available. Both methods are applicable to dry gases of pipeline quality within the range of conditions under which transmission and distribution, including metering for custody transfer or other accounting purposes, are normally carried out. In general, such operations take place at temperatures between about 263 K and 338 K (approximately -10℃ to 65℃) and pressures not exceeding 12 MPa (120 bar). Within this range, the uncertainty of prediction of both methods is about 0,1% provided that the input data, including the relevant pressure and temperature, have no uncertainty. The method given in Part 2 is also applicable (with increased uncertainty) to broader categories of natural gas, including wet or sour gases, within a wider range of temperatures and to higher pressure, for example for reservior or underground storage conditions or for vehicular (NGV) applications. The method given in Part 3 is applicable to gases with a higher content of nitrogen, carbon dioxide or ethane than normally found in pipeline quality gas. The method may also be applied over wider ranges of temperature and pressure but with increased uncertainty. For the calculation methods described to be valid, the gas must be above its water and hydrocarbon dewpoints at the prescribed conditions. This International Standard gives all of the equations and numerical values needed to implement both method. It is planned to make verified computer programs available (see Annex B).

This part of ISO 12213 specifies a method for the calculation of compression factors when the superior calorific value, relative density and carbon dioxide content are known, together with the relevant pressures and tempertures. If hudrogen is present, as is often the case for gases with a synthetic admixture, the hydrogen content also needs to be known. The method is primarily applicable to pipeline quality gases within the ranges of pressure p and temperature T at which transmission and distribution operations normally take place, with an uncertainty of about 0,1%. For wider-ranging applications the uncertainty of the results increase (see Annex F). More detail concerning the scope and field of application of the method is given in ISO 12213-1.
