This part of IEC 62446 defines outdoor thermographic (infrared) inspection of PV modules and plants in operation. The inspection can include cables, contacts, fuses, switches, inverters, and batteries. This inspection supports the preventive maintenance for fire protection, the availability of the system for power production, and the inspection of the quality of the PV modules. Included in this document are the requirements for the measurement equipment, ambient conditions, inspection procedure, inspection report, personnel qualification and a matrix for thermal abnormalities as a guideline for the inspection. This document defines outdoor thermography on photovoltaic (PV) modules and Balance-of- system (BOS) components of PV power plants in operation, using passive techniques (standard system operating conditions under natural sunlight, without any external power or irradiation sources). IEC 60904-12-1 covers general methods for laboratory or production-line PV module thermographic imaging but not the specific details that are most relevant to outdoor imaging of operational power plants including BOS components. Two different levels of inspections are currently used: a) A simplified thermographic inspection. This is a limited inspection to verify that the PV modules and BOS components are functioning, with reduced requirements for the qualification of personnel. For example, during a basic commissioning of a PV plant. Authoritative conclusions regarding module quality are not possible with this inspection, and examples of abnormalities are provided to aid the inspector. b) A detailed thermographic inspection and analysis. This may include thermal signatures which differ from the examples provided, and therefore requires a deeper understanding of the thermal abnormalities. For example, it may be used for periodic inspections according to the IEC 62446 series and for trouble-shooting the cause of underperforming systems. Absolute temperature measurements may be made. An authorized expert in PV plants, together with thermography experts can perform the inspection.

This part of IEC 60904 describes procedures for the measurement of the current-voltage characteristics of multi-junction photovoltaic devices in natural or simulated sunlight. It is applicable to single PV cells, sub-assemblies of such cells or entire PV modules. It is principally intended for non-concentrating devices, but parts may be applicable also to concentrating multi-junction PV devices. An essential prerequisite is the spectral responsivity of the multi-junction devices, whose measurement is covered by IEC 60904-8-1. The requirements for measurement of current-voltage characteristics of single-junction PV devices are covered by IEC 60904-1 whereas this document describes the additional requirements for the measurement of current-voltage characteristics of multi-junction PV devices. This document may be applicable to PV devices designed for use under concentrated irradiation if they are measured without the optics for concentration and irradiated using direct normal irradiance and a mismatch correction with respect to a direct normal reference spectral irradiance distribution is performed. This part of IEC 60904 gives guidance for the measurement of the spectral responsivity (SR) of multi-junction photovoltaic devices. It is principally intended for non-concentrating devices, but parts may be applicable also to concentrating multi-junction PV devices. The SR is required for analysis of measured current-voltage characteristics of multi-junction PV devices as described in IEC 60904-1-1. The requirements for measurement of SR of single-junction PV devices are covered by IEC 60904-8, whereas this document describes the additional requirements for the measurement of SR of multi-junction PV devices. This document only considers the measurement of SR of individual junction layers within a two-terminal multi-junction device. This document may be applicable to PV devices designed for use under concentrated irradiation if they are measured without the optics for concentration.

This document describes a discrete component bypass diode electrostatic discharge (ESD) immunity test and data analysis method. The test method described subjects a bypass diode to a progressive ESD stress test and the analysis method provides a means for analyzing and extrapolating the resulting failures using the two-parameter Weibull distribution function. It is the object of this document to establish a common and reproducible test method for determining diode surge voltage tolerance consistent with an ESD event during the manufacturing, packaging, transportation or installation processes of PV modules. This document does not purport to address causes of electrostatic discharge or to establish pass or fail levels for bypass diode devices. It is the responsibility of the user to assess the ESD exposure level for their particular circumstances. The data generated by this procedure may support qualification of new design types, quality control for incoming material, and/or identify the need for additional ESD controls in the manufacturing process. Finally, this document does not apply to large energy surge events such as direct or indirect lightning exposure, utility capacitor bank switching events, or the like.
