This International Standard specifies a method for the dissolution of aluminium oxide primarily used for the production of aluminium, by means of attack by hydrochloric acid under pressure in a sealed borosilicate glass tube, in order to obtain a test solution for certain determinations. The method is not applicable to the preparation of test solutions for the determination of silicon, sodium or boron, owing to the possibility of extraction of these elements from the glass. NOTE —Hydrochloric acid may be replaced by another appropriate acid. In this case, the acid should be stated in the method of test of the impurity.

This International Standard specifies the practical requirements for the taking of a representative sample intended for chemical analysis and measurement of the physical characteristics of aluminium oxide primarily used for the production of aluminium. It applies to aluminium oxide during transport, loading, unloading, continuous flow and storage, as well as to aluminium oxide after storage, for example : - when transported by a conveyor (belt, pipe, slat, etc.); - when stored in, or unloading from, a container, silo or tank, etc; - when in a heap, in a ship's hold, or in open silos, etc. NOTE - This International Standard has been established in the interim period until general methods for the sampling of chemical products, at present under study, have been developed. It will be revised when general methods are available.

The method is applicable to products of which the manga-nese content, expressed as Mn, is between 0,000 2 and 0,005 % (m/m) (0,000 258 and 0,006 46 % (m/m), express-ed as MnO). NOTE—If the apparatus available does not have a sufficient sensi-tivity for the lower contents of manganese, it is recommended that there should be prior extraction of the manganese, by the method specified in annex A.
