This International Standard specifies a gas chromatogrphic method for the determination of oligomers in propylene(proprene)for industrial use. The method is applicable to propylene hacving propene dimers{hexenes}contents greater than 20mg/kg and propene dimers{hexenes}contents greater than 30mg/kg NOTE - Propylene dimers are the main part of the called "green oil"formed during partial hydrogenation to remove propadiene and propyne from propylene(about8%).Propylene dimers consist mainly of methylpentenes,2,3-dimethylbutenes(about 25%),hex-1-enes{about12%}and C6(about 20%).

The method comprises the passage of a gaseous test portion through water to absorb acetone, acetonitrile, propan-2-ol and methanol, and subsequent gas chromatographic analysis of the aqueous solution, using a flame ionization detector, and comparison of the peaks obtained with those derived from an external standard. The method is applicable to products having acetone, propan-2-ol and methanol concentrations greater than 1 mg/kg, and acetonitrile concentrations greater than 10 mg/kg.

The absorbance of a 50 % aqueous caprolactam solution is spectrometrically measured at a wavelength of 390 nm and an optical path length of 50 mm. The result is expressed in Hazen units by multiplying the absorbance measured by a constant factor equal to 150. This factor is derived from measurements of absorbance of diluted standard solutions of platinum-cobalt scale.
