The hydroxy groups present in a test portion are esterified with phthalic anhydride. The excess phthalic anhydrids is hydrolyzed and the phthalic acid formed is neutralized with standard volumetric sodium hydroxide solution. If the sample contains free acidity or alkalinity a corresponding correction is made. From the corrected hydroxyl number, the apparat relative molecular mass may be calculated by a formula given.

This international Standard specifides the manner of application of the Karl Fischer method for the determination of traces of water in light olefins from C2 to C4 for industrial use. The methos is applicable to products having water contents between 10 and 100mg/kg. For higher contents use ISO 760 as sampling is not valid when there is a risk that condensation of water may occur.

This method is applicable to organic liquids that boil between 30 and 300 C at normal pressure, and that are chemically stable and do not corrode the apparatus during the distillation such as hydrocarbons, esters, alcohols, ketones, ethers and similar products. Specifies pyknometer and hydrometer methods. The principle of the pyknometer method bases on weighing an empty pyknometer, then filled with water and, finally, filled with the product under test at known temperatures.
